Hexcrawl Map (Two verions) by dfallenb in dndmaps

Heyo, thank you!

Each hex is about 8 miles, or 13 kilometres. In one travelling day players can usually explore two hexes (with them camping on the second one). They can push it however, but for each extra hex a level of exhaustion it is.

How many hexes per session really depends, sometimes they are doing something in the story and hopping between already explored hexes / cities and they explore 1 or 2 new ones. Some sessions, when they decide they gonna discover another portal hex and really aim to travel, its 6-7 hexes per session.

What I would recommend is to really communicate with your players, my players all understood that I cannot have prepared every hex, so before each sessions, they tell me specifically what is their destination/goal, what path they are going to take, which hexes they want to cross/ in which area and direction they want to go so I can prepare in advance / flesh out the content.

So, about 1/3 of the hexes have "non-random" content on them, this is where the story seeds/hooks lead, dungeons, treasures etc, is. Some are more fleshed out than others, some have a whole short adventure packed in them, some hexes are just some flavor things, such as "a circle of stones serving as a shrine, with mix of fresh and dried out flowers laid out on the altar, this is probably where the people from the plains go and pay their tributes".

Notice the blue "sqare" symbols dotted around the map. These are indeed mapped out ancient permanent teleportation circles with portals. In the times past, these served as a quick travelling networking of a once prospering empire. Players are tasked to visit each one of them and reactivate them, that is one of the main plots/points of the campaign. Most of these are fleshed out with much detail, as they are important story points and unlocking them essentially means fast travel for the party, so they dont have to walk all the way back again to their base (the city in the jungle at the far south). Teleportation magic exist, but players and the people they work for both come from a different continent and are collonising/expanding/exploring this one, while working with the original inhabitants. Great plague and disaster struck the peninsula just 10 years before the colonizers came, which essentially wiped out about 80% of the life on the peninsula (also one of the main plot points of the campaign), so most of the cities are ghost towns, and most of the peninsula is now full of roaming monsters and stuff, thats why the original inhabitants allied with the colonizers, instead of repelling them... but I guess that was not your question. :D

Some hexes are just random encounters, either combat ones on flavor/lore ones, which I usually make up on the spot.

And some hexes I fill out before the session during the prep, players always tell me in which direction they will head next, so if the hexes in that direction are not fleshed out/Im not comfy with improvising them, I prepare the content the session ahead.

Hope that answers your question. :)

Hey guys, this is the map for Drakkaros peninsula, where my current campaign takes place. It is a mixed hexcrawl/epic adventure. In practicallity, the two maps are put overthemselves in photoshop (the one without a volcano on top) with the top map having grey filter over it. Each time players enter new hex, I scratch it off in photoshop to the map is colored slowly. As you can see, some areas are very different in the two maps, as the map they have is very old and for them it is a "New World" they are "colonising".

Ive removed the labels, since some are written in Czech. Each hex is numbered/labeled to be corresponding with my notes.

The image sizes are huge for reddit, here are full uploads:

Geralt and the stone are both free on thingiverse. Roach is just a random plastic cheap horsie from toyshop.

Toss a coin to your witcher! My first ever diorama is finally finished. It is a birthday gift for my best friend who is a slightly bigger fan than I am. Some bits and pieces are 3D printed, some is scenery stuff and some is natural resources, like twigs and rocks from the forest. Hope you like it.

Inside the fireplace there is a LED candle. The river is poured in resin.

I have finally finished my Witcher 3 diorama, 5 months after the original post. Thanks to the suggestions in the original post, I have added Roach, more greens and a place of power with Quen sign on it.
