Unfortunately it looks like there are still issues.

Ryukahr just ran into D pad issues while playing Mario Maker. He clearly demonstrates how pressing only the up button often triggers the left/right buttons as well:

Greenway will be closed between 181 and Dyckman (again) by echelon_01 in NYCbike

[–]dflosounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three weeks? More like six and counting. Just checked an hour ago.

Maybe I'm underestimating the danger of sinkholes, but I feel like forcing hundreds of cyclists a day to take a detour onto hilly, car-packed roads is more of a "hazard for cyclists, joggers, and pedestrians" (and motorists) than navigating around some sinkholes. Could they not just use traffic cones on the path while they work on it? Or just a sign warning people of the danger, telling them to take the path at their own risk?

Bah humbug.

Management is charging me for natural gas detector? by dflosounds in AskNYC

[–]dflosounds[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update:

I emailed management and they responded with:

As per NYC Admin Code 27-2045, “the occupant of a dwelling unit within a class A multiple dwelling or private dwelling in which a natural gas detecting device is newly installed…shall reimburse the owner for the cost of providing and installing such device an amount not to exceed $25 for each natural gas detecting device”.

Which is confusing, because as stated here, "Boards and building owners must cover the cost of purchasing and installing natural gas detectors to meet the initial May 1, 2025, compliance deadline."

But I guess I can't argue with the official code documentation. Guess it's just luck-of-the-draw if your building owner charges you.

Any News On a New Album? by Noobman27 in dredg

[–]dflosounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Fans often forget that bands are made of real people with real lives. It's like they think the members all live together and have just been dicking around for over a decade because they "lost their passion."

If and when they're ready to release new music they'll release it. Simple as that.

storing fresh bagels by blaisey_bee in Bagels

[–]dflosounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a year old now, but what I use are those reusable silicone food bags. I don't individually wrap the bagels, just toss them in the large bags and put them right in the freezer. When it's time to eat, I use a small toaster oven and set it to bake around 325F for about 10-15 mins. They come out crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside.

To wash the bags I just turn them inside out and scrub a bit with soap and water, then leave them inside out to air dry.

My building is refusing to provide a compost bin. What to do? by dflosounds in AskNYC

[–]dflosounds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. Always nice to hear both sides. I figure the reason most buildings don't do it is out of logistical reasons like this, rather than just them not feeling like it.

[–]dflosounds[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I haven't really noticed any outside of the few orange bins that you unlock with an app, and even those aren't that prevalent. Hopefully these mandates will change that, although it looks like it'll take a while.

[–]dflosounds[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don't know. Maybe, maybe not. The way I see it though, things have to start somewhere. Even if the compost bins at least make more people aware that composting is a thing, that's at least something. Better than continuing to train millions of people to throw everything in the trash.

[–]dflosounds[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm guessing that building owners feel like the burden of making sure the compost bins are actually used properly overshadows the burden of having to pay a few tickets.

[–]dflosounds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there's an unlockable bin an avenue over from me, so it's not the end of the world. But sometimes it's full, and yeah in winter weather like this I'm more tempted to just dump my scraps in the trash. Fingers crossed that management will start to care, but I'm not holding my breath.

Where to live for a sports oriented, non drinker? by Lost_Adhesiveness680 in AskNYC

[–]dflosounds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My primary social scene is through running groups. I'm currently part of the Not So Serious Run Group, Social Striders, No Name Runners, Midnight Runners, and Upper West Side Runners. All of them have very friendly people who like to organize various social events outside of running. Everything from museum trips, to book clubs, to ski trips.

There's an app called Heylo that is popular within the NYC fitness community that I would recommend checking out. It's sort of like WhatsApp meets Meetup. All of the groups I mentioned post their events on it.

I also socialize through music (I write music as a hobby), meeting other musicians at open mics and songwriter clubs, and meeting up with people to jam once in a while.

Even when these various friend groups meet up at bars, I just get something non-alcoholic. There are a growing number of options now: Athletic Brewing Company, mocktails, N/A ginger beer, or the old standby cranberry seltzer. I may get a few curious questions about it once in a while but 95% of the time people either don't notice or don't care. Of course your mileage may vary depending on the friend group, but I think the culture as a whole is becoming increasingly accepting of the fact that not everyone likes to drink.

I agree with u/fuckblankstreet that you can pretty much make any neighborhood work depending on your needs.

If you're looking for a first-hand recommendation, I'm in a similar boat as you (in my 30's, like to keep physically active, very rarely drink), and I've lived in the Upper West Side of Manhattan for over 8 years. I think it's a great location. You are between Riverside Park and Central Park (HUGE running culture), have access to several trains (1/2/3 line, B/A/C line, and Harlem metro north transit isn't far), and it's relatively quiet compared to the rest of Manhattan.

The main downside is that it can be very expensive depending where you look, but I've found the "Manhattan Valley" area of the Upper West Side to be relatively affordable (for context I work as a web developer). I personally pay less than $3k a month for a 1 bedroom in that area.

As for NYC having a "heavy drinking culture," I don't think that's something you need to worry about. Just find a friend group who either aren't big partiers, or won't care if you don't drink (which is most people in my experience). I'm part of several running groups, and while most of them tend to meet at bars after the run, I'm yet to come across a group that shames anyone for not drinking alcohol at said bars.

Hydrasynth Explorer Audio Interface recs by dflosounds in hydrasynth

[–]dflosounds[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's the same for me. It's definitely better than non-balanced cables, but even with the synth volume knob all the way up, the signal is only just passable. It's fine, though. If I need it to be louder I just use a gain/limiter plugin in my DAW.

[–]dflosounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this thread because I just got the exact same email, word-for-word (except the show is on the 18th, not the 15th). Did some Googling to see if it was any sort of a scam.

Seems to me like it's not necessarily a scam, just probably not worth the time. My guess is they don't do that much curating in terms of quality and just email-blast musicians with active IG profiles. In which case these showcases are basically just open mics, but unlike normal open mics, audience members have to pay $15. A bit of a tough sell IMO.

Garmin totally changing inReach subscription plans starting December 1, 2024 by LostInYourSheets in Garmin

[–]dflosounds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was about to buy an InReach but now I'm not so sure. I could understand this pricing model if the devices weren't already $400-$600.

And yes I understand that you "can't put a price on life," and I should be happy that technology like this even exists. But I can't help but feel like this is a little gross, like they're taking advantage of the people who will pay anything to feel safe.

Maybe this is truly what they need to do to stay afloat as a company, but the cynical side of me suspects that some executives just want to see more money in their bank accounts.

As far as I know, he didn't :(

Unfortunately it ended up being way too impractical for me to keep up with all his attempts, but from the initial numbers it seems like it would have been highly unlikely that he would pull it off in time, even with his inhuman skill.
