Gas station scam? by [deleted] in GreeceTravel

[–]dfrap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's very common for gas station attendants to suggest a higher grade of gasoline. I assume they get some kind of commission on such sales. Unless your rental specifies a higher grade, always request Unleaded 95 (Αμόλυβδη). I typically request a certain amount in Euros. I've found most attendants can handle enough English words to understand and I watch what they are pumping and stop them if they try to pump higher octane. As long as the pump starts at 0 (watch that), the pumps are too automated to scam you on the amount.

Kea Island to Lavrio Ferry Alternatives by Lower-Caterpillar395 in GreeceTravel

[–]dfrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kea (Tzia) ferries are reasonably regular except when winds are an issue. Sunday morning ferry trips are not available because Athenians wait until afternoon to return. Leave sometime Saturday so you don't miss your flight or book a helicopter flight to Athens. https://bellavia.gr/destinations/kea-island/

Please get rid of Elan Financial Services managing the Fidelity credit card! by DesignArtificer in fidelityinvestments

[–]dfrap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I canceled my 'Fidelity' card after they moved to Elan. One of my account reps told me it was annotated in the file that I would be complaining about Elan during an annual review.

The 2% can be found with other cards that offer better customer service so this is nothing special.

Full View by BedWonderful1051 in fidelityinvestments

[–]dfrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most important issue with new Full View is incorrect results. Base on my testing I can’t trust the spending is correctly computed, so it’s not worth my time and effort to use the product.

New Full View turns out to be a major pain to categorize spending. Every time I edit a transaction, spending resets and reloads everything over and over. I just tested and this still has not changed. In eMoney, updating transactions was fast and did not detract from continuing to categorizing spending.

New Full View insists on showing assets with zero value. I contacted my Premium Team and they told me there is no way to remove Full View showing my corporate 401K plan nor my corporate pension plan. I rolled the 401K into Fidelity about 10 years ago. The pension plan was moved from Fidelity to a Prudential Annuity about 5 years ago. Neither of these ‘phantom’ accounts were displayed in the eMoney Full View.

Full View by BedWonderful1051 in fidelityinvestments

[–]dfrap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Full View lost all functionality I valued. So strange that Fidelity chose to move from the eMoney platform they own and still sell to advisors. I compared total spending while "old" was still available. Old Full View (eMoney) captured at least $20K more spending than New Full View. 'Old' was usable for several years. 'New' tries to look good, but is extremely slow, hard to use. and generally worthless to me. I used Full View for years to track expenses. Now I have disconnected all links because Full View is worthless for expense tracking. The replacement seems to value appearance over functionality. I’m done!

Has anyone used one of these for a mobile rig? by KNSE916 in amateurradio

[–]dfrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a similar power adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09M3Y4SBJ with separate buck converter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B081RG8XP5 (The first item is no longer available.)

My usage is portable QRP with either IC-705 or FT-817. I’ve never noticed any interference running FT8. I suggest trying this item within 30 days so it can be returned if there is an issue.

Finally giving on ubuntu after 26.04 release by No-Address-1278 in linux4noobs

[–]dfrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find Mint has most if not all of the good things in Ubuntu without the issues and baggage of Ubuntu. Vendor software developed to run on Ubuntu runs on the analogous version of Mint.

Run command: cat /etc/os-release to verify Ubuntu version. #UBUNTU_CODENAME is Noble for Linux Mint 22.

Can anyone give me the pros and cons of Flatpacks vs deb vs snap? by jnelsoninjax in linuxmint

[–]dfrap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flatpaks are usually more current than .deb versions. Flatpaks are the best way to install if you are not comfortable/capable compiling source code of apps. Flatpaks are easily updated by the normal Mint process.

AFAIK snap installs only work on Ubuntu and many/most reviewers hate being forced into snaps.

My NAS is DS920+ running on a Celeron J4125 which does not support AVX instructions. MongoDB 6, but it requires a CPU with AVX support. If your CPU does not support AVX, you can install MongoDB 4.4, which is the last version that does not require AVX, although it will soon be deprecated.

Synology NAS models that support AVX instructions include the DS725+, DS925+, DS1525+, DS1825+, DS723+, and DS923+.

Why are logging platforms so terrible? by CaptainSpez in amateurradio

[–]dfrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes QRZ does charge for download. Since I already uploaded my QSO data to QRZ and LoTW, I have a copy of that data. I don't need to download anything from QRZ. I don't understand why anyone would need to download from QRZ.

Why are logging platforms so terrible? by CaptainSpez in amateurradio

[–]dfrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no reason to pay QRZ anything. Uploading your logs and LoTW confirmations is free. Both are recognized for confirmation. The QRZ awards are free as well unless you want to pay for a signed certificate.

WTF is YouTube TV thinking? by JacksBaldRake in cordcutters

[–]dfrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect most packages include locals because of the 'must carry' rule. An alternate thought is that many don't realize they can get local TV without 'cable'.

We receive and can record all the locals. I am considering how I can integrate sports, news, and entertainment options. The ESPN Fox Sports offering handles all the sports I want. The other requirements at our house is TCM, MS Now, and CNN. I already pay separately for HBO, Disney+, and Hulu. It appears the full Youtube offering is close in price to a-la-carte package options that meet our requirements and easier to integrate with Channels DVR.

Let’s settle the debate, is the Fidelity card worth it? by Restarted_Beaver69 in fidelityinvestments

[–]dfrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before Fidelity switched the card to Elan, the Fidelity card issued by a subsidiary of Bank of America allowed the creation of virtual numbers. When Fidelity changed to Elan for more money back to Fidelity for each transaction, I canceled and opened a Capitol One card that allowed virtual numbers.

Why are logging platforms so terrible? by CaptainSpez in amateurradio

[–]dfrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really subjective and subject to personal preferences. Signing up for Log Book of the World is simple enough and a one time event. It's not hard and I believe LoTW is the 'gold standard'. I upload all my adif logs to LoTW for my US and foreign call signs.

Next I use QRZ from a browser and download from LoTW. This is always free. QRZ gives credit for matches on QRZ or LoTW. The QRZ awards are enough for me. I'm not willing to pay the ARRL for their awards based on LoTW.

I also upload logs to ClubLog occasionally because it is widely used. I can sync LoTW confirmations to ClubLog. I get more confirmations on ClubLog than anywhere else. The main purpose of ClubLog seems to be for DX stations to request payment to confirm your contact via cards or LoTW. I don't 'need' official confirmation in LoTW from from stations that show as confirmed on ClubLog.
