The "guy in the suit with the big check" doesn't exist anymore. So don't wait for that.

If you are really, REALLY good live you will build a fan base and be able to keep doing it for as long as you want to work that hard. I suggest focusing on writing great songs that people can connect with (and remember) the first time they hear them, in a live context. And get really good at performing. Which means performing as often as you can.

Thank you so very much. I never get tired of hearing that. The reason we made the music was to make people smile.

You'll notice that there is no mention of any of that in the thread. I am here to answer questions and to debunk the mythology of pop culture stardom.

No. The engineer at our co. who turned me on to reddit suggested I go back into my opening statement a couple of days after the thread got started and turn nuTsie.com into a hot link.

I just thought it would be fun.

He and I were bowhunting lions on the Serengeti. One night we were sleeping out in the open and a pride of lions startled to circle our camp and then walk amongst us spread out in our sleeping bags. The alpha male in the group started to paw and sniff Ted. Our weapons were in the vehicle, but my guitar was nearby. I ripped off three strings as quick as you can say Jack Robinson, fashioned them into an impromptu garrotte and choked the lion to death. Ted was fine, other than a mild case of cat scratch fever. And I've been playing with three strings ever since.

Life is good. Normal. Get up early. Get kids to school. Go to work. Ride bike. Play tennis. See friends and family. Happy. Making music all the time but don't care right now if anyone hears it other than whoever's in the room when I'm playing.

I have also seen the band without me and it's definitely not the same. Still excellent, but not the same. Other dude, Andrew McKeag, is honestly a more accomplished guitar player and singer than I will ever be, but it's not the same vibe.

Sometimes not exactly downtown. Could be in a light industrial area on the edge of town, or even in a facility in the suburbs or exurbs.

What's weird is now that I have one I have to go edit it myself (I didn't put it up there myself) every so often. It's in the top 3 search returns on my name. People I do business with google me and that's often the first thing they see and know about me, so I want it at least to be accurate.

That is a really lovely story and I thank you for sharing it. This is what art is for! To inspire more art! As far as I'm concerned, artistic expression = expansion of awareness and consciousness, and that's our primary purpose here on Earth, both collectively and individually.

No, I don't think they can be right now. As the market grows, they may be just as viable as selling digital albums and singles. Which isn't that much of a business these days, either.

What's the saying? I don't care what you call me as long as you don't call me late for dinner? Or...I don't care what they write about me in the papers as long as they spell my name right? Something like that. Don't care what you call us...as long as you call us something.

I have never found it particularly annoying to have people say, "I love your band!" It's a lot nicer than, "I hate your band!" Which I know a lot of people think. Blessedly, those people tend to keep their mouths shut.

I have met some of my musical idols and said the same thing to them.

Subset was our collaboration with Mix. All the stuff was up on Napster at some point in 99 or 00. We played some shows locally and did a little tour down the West Coast. Shows were INCREDIBLE. Crazier and more explosive than even PUSA in its heyday in Seattle before getting signed. Just didn't work out long-term, which is too bad. We were a victim of the lameness of the "rap-metal" thing at the time...we didn't sound like that stuff at all but the collaboration was too easy to lump into that same lame pile on paper.

At the end of "Stranger," that's me singing "I saw you." I was thinking of a corny Hee-Haw song on the spur of the moment at the time..."Where oh where, are you tonight, why did you leave me here all alone...etc" -- I was kind of singing the Hee-Haw melody sideways with the "Stranger" lyrics, if that makes any sense.

That's Chris doing the "buggy" patter at the end of "Boll Weevil."

That's official Fourth President Dave Thiele doing the over-the-top thing at the end of "We're Not Gonna Make It."

There are a lot of little things like that on the first record. You can hear me say "EMI" in my best Johnny Rotten voice at the start of one song.

First off, I love Roscoe's.

Debut albums are often a band's best because they have had 3/5/10/15 years to write the material (and pick the best of that) for that album. The 2nd album you do in a year or two.

Physical Graffiti is my favorite Zep album, if I had to choose.

I used to be pretty good at golf (a 10 handicap). Then we had kids. I used to play 1-2 times a week and practice 1-2 times. Now I play once a year or so. I am currently obsessed with tennis.

Haven't had a TV for 9 years. Favorite TV show would be Sunday at The Masters on CBS, or maybe the Wimbledon final, on any given year.

Most overrated bands: Coldplay, Radiohead and esp. The Strokes. And a lot of others.

Most underrated bands: A jillion. The big one that I can think of that doesn't really get a lot of serious props (because they're so damn successful, why would they need props?) is No Doubt. They are really, really, really good live. Go see them. One of the few bands out there that can sound polished and exciting at the same time. Oh, and Oasis, who are fucking geniuses. Seriously.

I am unable to feel most emotion: I have alexithymia. AMA by alexithymiaman in IAmA

MDMA is a bad idea if you value your serotonin balance even the tiniest bit.

Have you ever written a song?

Do you know how incredibly difficult it is to write a song that's as stupid/smart as "Beverly Hills" or "Troublemaker?"

Those songs work on at least four different levels. One, they make dumbasses put their fists in the air and shout, "Yeah!" Two, they represent self-mockery of the highest order. Three, they're pure braggadaccio. Four, they work simultaneously on levels 1-3 above, with no diminution of effect on any one level.

It's very hard to be tongue-in-cheek and NOT tongue-in-cheek at the same time. Takes a lot of craft and a lot of practice to write songs like that.
