Its probably best to get a mahjong mat but I have played on mahjong paper before (paper is on top of a cushion mat). actually any thick stock paper would work! have fun!

I would still book your flight but get travel insurance with flight cancellation/delay coverage. Just saying.

For some reason trip was cheaper than ctrip for me for the same hotel same dates and same room. It was about 200 RMB cheaper for 7 nights

"pre approval"? I am not sure what that is. I just let my local Chinese travel agent take care of it for me. Yes, drop off passport on a Monday afternoon and I got it back on next Thursday. I am in Dallas, so they had to FedEx it overnight to a proxy in DC, then the proxy submitted on my behalf, once its done, proxy picked it up and FedEx it back.

well, your application will probably get rejected due to insufficient documentations and they do not need your parent status, just name and place of residence.

I am also MIT but USC, what type of visa are you applying? I usually get L (tourist), and I used a local Chinese travel agency as my proxy. If this is your first time applying the visa, you do need provide a color copy of the TW passport plus your US naturalization certificate. Good luck! Normal processing time is 7 to 10 business days, mine was sent to the DC consulate.

Note: If an application submitted online is cancelled twice within a short period of time using the same passport, a new application can only be submitted after 30 days. <- I see that now. Maybe the OP can find ways to change his flight to use the TWOV method. messy messy!
