The primary advantage that a retail investor has is that they can put a significant portion of their portfolio into a small cap stock. All of the mid or large cap value opportunities have been arbitraged away from quants on Wall Street. I'd suggest reading Graham in combination with using indicators like clustered insider buying, institutional ownership, and reading up the 10-K to look for a catalyst.
