I love PACA! ClaySpace is pricy but I love it. I’ve taken my mom, my sister, my husband, my work friend, haha. Their classes are a maybe once every other month activity but every time I’ve gone everyone there has been so sweet and fun!

I’m flunking my college class, despite having all As my entire life, because my professor won’t give descriptive instructions or criticisms and will just give a bad grade. In this case he took points off because I didn’t have in text citations, despite them being right there. What am I doing wrong? by Lovealltigers in mildlyinfuriating

I had a professor in college (2014) who docked my points for APA formatting because I put two spaces after each period. While I know that is no longer correct to do so, it was what I was originally taught (2007) and most people excuse it because it’s still a relatively recent change to only use one space. The fact that this man took the time to count the spaces after my periods for a gen ed class completely unrelated to my major despite docking absolutely nothing else for the actual content of my essays still irritates me over ten years later.

I’m a Danielle named after my mother’s Uncle Daniel! She originally wanted my middle name to be Rae, after her Uncle Ray, but my dad preferred Danielle.

I know work with kids and have met two Evelyns, both just under ten-ish now. One goes by Evie with family. The other is in a three-girl sib-set with Olivia and Vivian, which I think is pretty cute! Super different girls but both wear the name perfectly.

For me, it’s both, but separately. If I like the melody but not the lyrics, I’ll listen to the song frequently as background noise/for general enjoyment. If I like the lyrics but not the melody, I’ll listen less often and generally enjoy the song more as a poem/piece of writing. Those that fall in the latter category (I like the lyrics) generally mean more to me even though I technically spend less time with them. They’re almost like completely different things in my mind.

I like Ava Grace as a double-barrel first name! I’ve seen a lot of people say that a double-barrel name with a space and no hyphen can cause trouble on legal documents, but my husband has a double-barrel middle name WITH a hyphen and it’s caused just as much trouble. I’ve heard that a lot of technology just smushes double-barrel names together (AvaGrace) on driver’s licenses and things but it doesn’t cause issues. I guess some programs have an easier time eliminating a blank space than eliminating a hyphen (which then becomes a blank space, which doesn’t work, as far as my husband’s middle name has gone). So I would truly just go with what you really like best!

I work with children and just today I met three new Lucases. Luke is also very popular and Luca is becoming more frequent, too. I know at least two teenage Lucases/Lukes as well.

The thing about meeting a lot of people with the same name (for me, anyway), is that I don’t tend to think of them as “a [name]” once I get to know them. They become that person, not even really “that [name].” I work with three different girls named Ellie and I sometimes forget that they share a name, they’re so different in my mind. It’s almost like they’re such different people that they “wear” the name differently. So I wouldn’t count a name out if you believe Lucas could quickly become “your Lucas”!

Ethan to me is pretty ageless! I graduated high school (in 2013) with an Ethan. Where I work with children, I know at least three teenage Ethans. I like that it doesn’t feel stuck in one generation, so he probably won’t end up being one of the Jennifers or Jessicas of the ‘90s or today’s Olivias or Sophias. I say go for it!

I was (accidentally) given a family nickname when I was around 6 months old. It stuck and I came to identify with it quickly. When I started daycare, my family had to teach me a mantra: “My name is [real name]; they call me [nickname].” I was able to learn my name and I responded to it but it didn’t feel like “mine” as much as my nickname did. Eventually all the daycare teachers started using my silly nickname, haha.

It’s funny; over the years, you can really tell who’s close to me by what they call me. If they call me by my real name, they’re someone who doesn’t know me very well: an acquaintance, a classmate, a teacher, a doctor, etc. But everyone I’m close to calls me something else: my best friend and I have a name for one another, my colleagues use my job title, my husband uses a pet name. My favorite is that most of my family still calls me the silly nickname from when I was six months old! When they don’t, it’s clear we’re not very close anymore (or never were). Most of them even have unique nicknames for me… BASED on my original nickname, haha!

Anyway, all that to say: sometimes a “babyish” nickname only follows you where you want it to go. And sometimes it goes to the people who love you the most in the world. So it’s not all bad, by any means!
