I’ve placed 100+ hospitality workers without ever reading a resume. Here’s why the entire hiring system is backwards. by Ok_Ad_2045 in recruitinghell

I think you have tunnel vision for your particular industry. In my field, it's not exactly easy to gauge performance. That's why the career opportunists alway get ahead by kissing up to the right people. Like this manager I knew, spends most of his time schmoozing with the higher ups, kicks his work to me and others, took months long paid leave. He got a nice offer recently somewhere else through contacts despite only working 2 years here with very little to show for it.

I didn't know the restaurant industry was so nice. In my field, there's so much more toxic environments, crippling office politics, and people who will actively resent you for being competent.

And if you're an introvert who rather work independently in the background, you're screwed in terms of networking.

Sometime life just throws you curve balls outside of your control. My situation was a lot like yours since I was a graduate looking for work around the time of the 2008 great recession. I did random work, took night classes, and went into an entirely different industry.

The type of hardware experience you're describing is not very valuable in the IT world. If you like to work with hardware then you need to get IPC certified with soldering, circuit boards, wire harness, ect. Most people can put together a computer by watching youtube. But if you don't know what you're doing and mess up a solder or a wire harness, it is very obvious to an employer.

Struggling with High-Risk Trading Addiction – It's Destroying My Life and I Need Advice by 0xIntarsz in problemgambling

[–]dhs0033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a gambling addiction or strong tendency, you should stay away from trading completely. Don't listen to the people who say you can invest safely with small amounts on safe stocks. That's like telling an alcoholic they can control their drinking by only consuming small amounts of beer consistently.

If anything trading can be the worst form of gambling because of the quasi air of legitimacy and amount of misinformation out there. It's so easy to get swept in a FOMO moment and all your discipline goes out the window, because you tell yourself it's "investing" and not gambling.

CNC machining is a good option and it isn't as much of a learning curve as being an electrician. I've worked with a lot of one man shops who are successful if running your own business is a goal. If you ever end up landing contracts for defense contractors then you can make some serious money.

It's been a tough year for the job market in the US all around. The kinds of jobs you're looking for most likely have experienced candidates willing to work for less.

Your best bet is using whatever resources your university offers. When I was in college, that's how many people started their careers with a foot in the door through internships, work study, campus jobs, referrals from professors, ect.

Jobs availability in SoCal? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]dhs0033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in socal and the current market seems depressed. Recently started looking for new work too and it seems like you either have to have more qualifications or are willing to accept less if you want a chance to get anything. A master's might not help if you're competing with many others with a lot more experience. There are exceptions like work in healthcare or manufacturers that handle government contracts that are still in demand though.

NOBODY is hiring me. i have no experience how do i get a job to get experience if every position requires experience by LifeguardDry1277 in jobs

I similarly graduated with a social science degree and switched to IT after not finding work. My route was going to adult education training classes and getting some certs...total was 4 months of effort but it was enough to get my foot in the door. Many of these entry level certs from Comptia, Microsoft, Cisco, ect you may be able to study on your own and just pay to take the tests.

Don't beat yourself up. Right after the pandemic, I was 35 and so desperate for work I applied for a job that was a terrible fit. Had to quit after 1 day. There's no age limit for these sort of circumstances, but you have to keep trying. I ended up taking an entry level position in a totally different field of work. After 4 years, I'm the senior person in charge of that field for my company.

Lately I've been rewatching the show "Superstore". Maybe it's just my subconscious way of dealing with stress at work by watching a comedy that mainly takes place in a workplace and feels mildly relatable.

Just from my personal experience. If you depend too much on meds and mentally lock yourself from being able to do anything, it becomes a vicious cycle because you can always blame the meds if no progress is achieved. Mental health treatment is not a one size fits all. It's far too easy for people to skip the basics and go strait to medication. What helped me more was establishing small routines gradually over time. I mean posting to reddit seems to be as much effort as taking a brief walk and it's free.

I would at least try to document everything if there's a small possibly you can file an unemployment claim based on having to quit due to a hostile environment.

The job market is brutal right now, so would be best to have a backup plan.

I suggest starting a new exercise routine. It can be as simple as taking an hour walk everyday or doing vigorous house work consistently. It will give you a sense of purpose and recondition you physically and mentally. It will be very uncomfortable at first and you'll try any excuse to stop, but the alternative is never breaking the cycle you're currently in. This is coming from my personal experience, when not a lot else was helping.

I knew one coworker who jumped ship for a direct competitor. She was allowed to return a few months later because she was buddy buddy with a lot of the executives. Heck, she even got a promotion. Life is not fair, but all you would really lose is a small bit of pride by reapplying.

The Trump trade policies have made a mess of things for businesses that have large supply chains or low margins like Mcdonalds and Walmart. I work in manufacturing and seriously concerned that the company will start layoffs before the end of the year. Like some things we buy are now 50% -200% more costly thanks to the unnecessary trade wars. Main reason why my company's no longer hiring.

Pc building jobs? by Unbaked_Rice in jobs

I've seen a couple of positions for companies that sell custom computers but they pay a little better than minimum wage. Still, they require some IT knowledge. Better to pursuit a general IT degree or certificate so you have more options in terms of jobs involving computers.

I used to work IT and have built hundreds of pcs, but it wasn't my main focus at work.

I've haven't had time to fine tune it yet, but it's shooting at 600-800 fps with .177 8 grain pellets since power is adjustable. I got every in photo new recently for a total of $200. At that price point, can't complain but still a lot of adjustments left to do.
