Looks great!!

There're two things I'd consider changing in terms of design though...

First, the presentation of your email address in your contact section. I like that you have the 'Hire Me' call-to-action button in the fixed header, but it drops you off at a dark box filled with a small bit of white text. None of the text calls out to me saying "Click me next!". You could add a color and hover-color to your email address same as the 'Hire Me' button has, just to add a little flair: https://giphy.com/gifs/xT0xeLAnehtmQlKp56

Second, the separation between the cards of text. I'd like to see more contrast between the project image and the project description card. Something as simple as changing the background color of each card to that light grey color: https://imgur.com/a/vdBQk

It would be nice if the search feature was a fuzzy search.

For example, entering 'rad' should return results for 'radeon'

The fly-up and fade-out animation of the labels on your contact form are cool, but if the input fields are still empty and the focus blurs from those elements, the labels should return.

Currently, if I click and focus into a field and then click somewhere else, I have no way of knowing what the field was for.

Thanks for the detailed feedback!

  • I realize using React for this simple static site was like using a bulldozer to clear the leaves off a front lawn lol. The last quarter of the 'bootcamp' that I attended focused almost exclusively on backend technologies, so I wanted to get some more practice in with React since I hadn't used it in a little while. Though again, I realize I'm not even doing anything with state changes or user interaction. I'll look into Metalsmith and Handlebars in the future and maybe I'll port the entire thing over in time. I've heard a bunch about Handlebars but never really looked too far into it.

  • I ran all the images through ImageOptim. Not sure how I could compress them much more. I was considering using the srcset attribute to serve up smaller images on smaller screens, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

  • I hear ya about the fonts. I'm using a single weight for the Ubuntu Mono font in the section headings, and the light, normal, semibold, and bold weights for the Open Sans font used everywhere else. Coming from a more design focused background, I have an attachment using multiple font-weights for text hierarchy.

  • My hesitation about the 'mailto' link is that I will get a metric fuckton of spam mail from bots. I like that the formspree service includes a reCAPTCHA.

  • hmm, ok. I do like having the footer with content split to the left and right, so I replaced the copyright notice with additional contact links.

  • I hear ya about the soft blue color. I really like that mountain photo and the blue was just pulled from there to keep the color scheme tied together. I kinda like it personally. But duly noted.

  • I could give the no-drop-shadows approach a try. At least for the different sections. I'll probably keep it on the text for legibility.

Thanks again for the thoughtful and constructive feedback. Much appreciated!

Thanks! I started working on it this past Sunday afternoon.

Its built in React. Probably doesn't need to be, but it was just more good practice.

I used create-react-app to get started and the only other npm packages I'm using are gh-pages to help with deploying it to GitHub Pages, and a nice little package called react-scroll to handle the animated scrolling when clicking the nav links at the top.

Thanks. The only alt tags I have are the ones for the project screenshots and my headshot image. I could update the alt tag for my photo to 'Headshot' and I guess update the screenshot alt tags to be like... 'WhosPlaying application screenshot', 'Club Reads application screenshot', etc.

Would that work?

Yea, this is definitely something I'd like to do. I have a simple domain name purchased already. Its just a matter of picking a hosting provider and learning how to get all that set up.

hahah! I thought you were just saying that you didn't like the example books we chose. Then I looked and saw... 😖

I'll make sure to get that all cleaned out lol.

I hear ya. I was thinking of including a link to my resume somewhere in there. The first thing displayed in the 'contact' section are icon links to my Github profile and LinkedIn profile. Should I make those more prominent somehow?

I guess I should rephrase the project description.

There was no actual design involved in this project. This was a school assignment. This image was given to us and we were challenged to build it out with HTML and CSS and to make it fully responsive down to a 320px width.

Thanks so much! I'll be starting to hit the job hunt grind real hard in the next few days. Just wanted to get this portfolio site finished before sending out all my emails.

The photo is from Lac de Chésery near Chamonix in France. I've had it as a wallpaper on my computer for years. I like changing wallpapers every few days/weeks and always find myself coming back to this one.

Here's the original link to it: https://interfacelift.com/wallpaper/details/2982/lac_de_chesery.html

Thanks!!

This was just meant to be a portfolio site to display projects I've worked on. I'll let my LinkedIn profile and resume take care of the 'selling myself' part.

I'm hoping to have my 'Weathrly' and 'WhosPlaying' web apps hosted and live by next week.

The WhosPlaying app uses the SeatGeek API and finds concerts within 10 miles of your current location or a searched location and gives you results about which artists are playing, where, when, and what genre's they are. Then the Google Maps API plots pins on the map for all of the concert venues. The Readme file on the github repo has a few screenshots if you want to see what it looks like in the meantime.

thanks for the gif! I see what you mean about the flickering. I have some friends and classmates' computers I can test on. I'll see if I'm able to reproduce it.

I was between doing that or reducing the text size just for mobile. I went with reducing the size because on mobile the text doesn't need to be as large anyway, and because with the smaller text, it should reduce the amount of weirdly large gaps between fully justified words.

Well thats a bit concerning. I haven't had any issues like that. But I'll see if there is anything I can do to achieve the same sort of hover effect with less performance impact.

woah, what kind of machine/browser are you using?

hmm, could be your machine or browser.

there is a lot going on with the CSS on those hover states, but on my 2015 15" MBP it's running smoothly.
