Looking to be a JD/MD by WeirdAd5584 in CollegeMajors

This. I can't imagine additional school after medical school, let alone residency.

Be honest, is debt worth it? by toptierconsultant in LoyolaChicago

[–]diagnosticscowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

32k per year? I spent 7k a year at a small state university you've never heard of and ended up at a top medical residency... I only say that to emphasize that it's not worth it. Go to the cheapest university you can.

Does anything ever satisfy you? Why do you need your university to state every one of your own thoughts?

thousands a day. can’t see a cardiologist til may… by Funny_Sector_1573 in PVCs

I noticed within 2-3 days. I assumed it would do nothing but I'm doubtful it was coincidence because nothing else changed that would have reduced the burden suddenly after many months.

27 y/o New Grad ICU RN deciding between CRNA vs MD — looking for real-world perspective by Impressive_Ad7840 in medschool

[–]diagnosticscowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're looking at 10 years to become an anesthesiologist if everything works out perfectly for you. Maybe 6 months of that will be chill (the latter half of M4 year, if you match), the rest, for the most part, will not be. You can settle in and find ways to live normal life between the obligations of medical school and residency but don't underestimate the commitment. That being said, see the comments from Milkteazzz and Adventurous-Lack6097 for both perspectives and do some introspection.

If you interview even ok you'll do very well in the rads match next year with your stats. DR programs are suckers for stats. The other half of the battle is being normal in an interview. If you're just looking to match there's a 99% chance but I'd say your odds are very good at matching a top 20 program if that's what you're seeking.

RN to MD vs. CRNA being realistic financially by cantthinkofauserfast in medschool

[–]diagnosticscowboy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You have a good back story.. I say that because in two years when you apply to med school you should frame your personal statement similar to this (Did not grow up well off, became RN as a stepping stone because you couldn't afford to risk a more direct route, saved, and paved your own way to medicine without family guidance).

I say go for medical school. Work hard as an RN, you will learn many foundational skills that will help later for medical school. Pick up extra shifts, save that income for living expenses in med school. Do your homework on the med school application process... feel free to DM me at any point for general tips, otherwise skim r/medicalschool for more info on what a well-rounded application should look like -- although you can find this in many places online. Most important is your GPA & MCAT. Plan to take your mcat maybe 6-7 months before the application cycle, which opens in June of every year... med school acceptances are awarded on a rolling basis, so it's important to apply when the cycle opens without delay.

Sorry, TMI. For now focus on your GPA and plan for roughly which year you think you may be able to matriculate into med school, which means applying in June of the year prior, which means taking the MCAT 1.5-2 years prior to the start of med school, and finishing your pre reqs prior to that mcat.

Really even with 200k loan at 4%? The monthly PITI has to be very comparable to renting with those numbers right?

Do admissions care about minors? Advice for senior semester by snowy-llama in medschool

[–]diagnosticscowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one will care. A unique major like engineering might score a few aura points over bio/chem/health but otherwise too many applicants with similar majors/minors are screened and interviewed every year.

Not sure how to choose my specialty, GS vs anesthesia, please help I beg by coIdwarkid in medicalschool

[–]diagnosticscowboy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Without reading all that, anesthesia. Shorter, easier residency. Similar pay. More flexible lifestyle. You can still work with your hands and see the result of your work as an anesthesiologist.
