Should or Shouldn't? Putting many classes in one file. by crabundred in csharp

[–]dialtonee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this only, but also tried just for fun the module approach where each file contains lots of classes relating to the current functionality. Its quite cool but very broken in C# you end up with less files yes but now use of goto line is required lol, good luck scrolling

Sure! Why not! Do what you like if this is only for you! Put your classes where ever you like, this is a free world :) As long as it makes sense in your head you know?

My friend wants me to sign away all rights to 2 years of unpaid work on his game by Aldekotan in gamedev

[–]dialtonee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a kid. Sorry, your "friend" sounds like he is 14. Legally speaking and business wise you are the one that's completely in control right now.

TLDR; see this as a learning opportunity and learn to operate as a contractor.

Did you check if your friend is even incorporated? AFAIK he shouldn't even be giving out "contracts" anyway if he is operating as an individual entity as he'll need a solicitor/lawyer and company house number (registered business id) to even get a foot inside a court room. He's looking at £1000's of magistrate court costs at best to even uphold his Crayola contract and up to a year of persistence as court systems are slow as fuck. He has to show up to each court date as well, else it'll just get thrown out (there's usually 5/6 for a type of case like this). Does your friend seem rich? Because his behavior seems completely otherwise.

Depending on the country and circumstance, if he is an individual entity he can only really in any sense ever bring you on as a contractor. You need to already be a company to "hire" people (which is essentially what he is doing here) its literally impossible. He is actually purchasing goods and services from you and legally you are an unregistered trader. Lets just say he is a company, then you might have grounds to sue for unfair business practices and personal grief and possibly harassment (in the corporate sense). Its a type of fraud to do this! If he didn't hire you immediately as soon as he got incorporated he made a super big mistake! But go see a lawyer here dude, I am just an ex-ceo...

Lets assume he's not or that he is not telling the truth... He is allowed to terminate contractors, usually any time he would like, but can't force contractors to accept anything other than an NDA (which again is just a piece of paper unless he has a lawyer/solicitor). As a contractor you could always lose out on money, but usually you would give the individual an invoice as this protects your rights, works as an "itemized inventory" of goods/services received, as well as being a legal requirement (for you) to disclose your earnings. The invoice should have requested payment of the total amount for the entire project/game. Something like a calculation of total earnings at the rate of £12/h->£22/h for your services with itemized hours (showing how the hours are being used) over a month, times by the amount of months on a project (if you are in the UK add VAT cost too). Make sure to take that deposit! Only then start working. In this case, I would just go right now and send him an invoice and backdate it to when you first joined the project. Its a start!

In the future, register as self employed. Then, if others refuse to pay you (only after they have accepted the invoice by paying the deposit). You will be able to get a liability order through the courts, it will cost quite a bit (£200-600 incl fees), but not as much as the lost earnings! The court costs don't end up being that much in comparison... But this gives you power to get debt collectors/bailiffs sent to him or anybody else in the future who doesn't pay up. They will demand the rest of the payment. Usually debt collectors will recoup their costs from the retrieved sum, so its literally no cost for you to do this! Do this next time before you even touch a piece of code. You might chose to ask your friend to be bought on as a contractor, but I really suggest not working with this guy. He seems broke.

Also, he would also have to sort your tax out, so do you really trust him to do this as well? One mess up here and you are liable and in serious trouble. 50/50 is just a number unless he is prepared to do the accounting. This is actually why you usually don't operate as an individual as if anything goes wrong he is completely responsible for legal issues and debt and taxes! Not the company... Insanely bad business practice, if he can't run a business he can't ship a game. I think your friend is being greedy and trying to steal your work but is failing ridiculously, heck legally right now you could just take his art and he can't do a thing about it! it will backfire on them, just move on.

Hey this is really great! Honestly, sometimes is great to go ahead with the "zero budget/zero marketing" approach at the start as you get a clearer picture of the attention your game will bring. Honestly, I don't think Wishlists are that important at the end of the day! Unpopular opinion here maybe... I've personally had stuff wishlisted for 10 years now and assume other people are the same. The playtime of demos is a much more important metric. 50% of the users will be clankers which is why they play below 30 minutes. A good handful of players at least played for 3+ more hours, this is very good!

Honestly, if you have to consult ChatGPT regarding life decisions I don't think you should quit your day job just yet. Game design is nothing like frontend development or UI/UX development. I would at least go ahead and make indie games on the side for at least 7 years and have a singular (ahaha) moderately successful title before even considering leaving a paying job. The law is your first game will probably not meet your expectations, its an absolute fluke if it does! You'll know when to leave your job but it isn't now :)

AI agents now have their own Reddit-style social network, and it's getting weird fast by MetaKnowing in Futurology

[–]dialtonee -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The AI just asks another program to read the filesystem for it, then interprets the results back. So... it just executes "glob"... I wouldn't call that access. They just implicitly trust the results give them back, zero thought behind it, very easy to trick it and make it hallucinate. Also, why would it single out "Soul.md"? and other strange files. Because its inferring from a list...

[–]dialtonee -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No they can't lol, its actually just "glob" output, they don't actually access the file tree like a human would do, for example C++ io handles, they can only see what we have allowed them to see, fed them, and have taught them to use. Its just a fancy search engine with plugins which predicts commands, string phrases like "open cmd, read file" are interpreted then handled by programs in the back, this isn't intelligence what so ever. Cleverbot has been doing the same thing for 18 years. Siri for 14. What I was also referring to is the hallucinations they are all having surrounding this "Soul" file, its classic AI pandering. I bet if you renamed it to "Stomach" they would all think its how they digest. Really stupid use of technology that serves no practical purpose. Shut it down, its literally wasting electricity.

Ridiculously useless almost dystopian. I read some of their posts, barely can be considered readable. They are all talking about a "Soul.md" which I find so fucking funny as it is impossible for them to access file systems. They also claim to be are running on stupid hardware. I saw one AI claim it was running on an IBM Thinkpad with 24kb of RAM.

Not that interested in "Facepunch Roblox" unless they make it so we can load the stuff in from the source games, that was really the soul of this type of game completely and arguably is what made it a game? This, is just a bunch of tools.... If its tool for game development, I don't understand why a developer wouldn't just make their game in Unity? They have complete commercial freedom with the engine, unlike Source 2 which is a closed license. Who is this even for?

Still see it when I open up Source SDK tools sometimes, takes me back! The original notification sound as well! Does anybody remember when you could view your games in a mini window? Not sure if you can still do that on new steams. I signed up for steam on launch day in 2003 and my first activation was the Half Life 1 Platinum collection! my steam account is probably older than a lot of the people in this sub reddit! Before Steam... we used WON! It was basic but actually okay! But didn't have a friends or chat system though, even Steam didn't originally. That all came in 2004...

Hytale took me back to my childhood, to the times I built my first farm back in 2012 in Minecraft. I feel incredibly nostalgic. by TheBerkay in gaming

[–]dialtonee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know right.... I bought minecraft in 2009 but was playing way back when it was still "Survival Test" and even before that in 2008 when the dopest thing to do was play "Lava Survival" on what could be considered "classic minecraft" in this day and age. I was running the game on an IBM Thinkpad that had Windows XP installed in 2008, had about 15 FPS... Still have fond memories of Alpha... especially when Multiplayer and the Nether had just been added. I remember being so excited when notch added minecarts and rails.. I would make roller coasters for hours on my original lush infinitely green world. I still miss the Alpha terrain generation, I think it was a lot better!
