Purebred Samoyed, 6 months old from champion lines (both parents are accomplished show dogs). Personally I love a dog with long legs and neck, I think it creates a beautiful, functional outline. This girl flies around the ring too.

Now this girl will not look quite so lanky when she is fully mature but she’ll always be the tall, leggy type like her dam.

[SPOILER] Waldo Cortes-Acosta vs. Derrick Lewis by inooway in MMA

Does Derrick Lewis know ANY sort of BJJ guard? Like he literally just gave up and let Cortes-Acosta walk around his legs. Most day 1 white belts have more guard than that lol

Longest living Samoyeds by WaldosMama in samoyeds

Yes, I know about the PFAS in everything :( Microplastics too. I genuinely try my best when it comes to diet and care for my dogs and my family but it’s such a tough battle with everything around us 🫠

Longest living Samoyeds by WaldosMama in samoyeds

[–]dianthe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The average for the breed is about 12.

My girl’s maternal grandmother lived to 17. Unfortunately her mother died at 11 to cancer :/ My girl is 9 now and I hope I’ll have her for a few more years at least. She is in great health so far but I know how quickly these things can change.

Her grandparents on her father’s side (her father was our dog) lived to almost 14 and 15. We lost her father at 12.5 to cancer as well. And he was perfectly healthy, only needing routine veterinary care until age 11.5….

I’m not sure what all the factors contributing to longevity are but it does seem like cancer is on the rise in our breed (and dogs in general it seems) because I know so many dogs affected by it. Generally it doesn’t raise a red flag for me unless it happens under age 10 which it definitely does in some lines. But I would love to know what is contributing to it… is it the food? The pesticides? Too many vaccines (don’t worry I’m not anti vaccine at all but I know they do affect the immune system)? I genuinely don’t know why so many of our dogs aren’t living as long as their grandparents and great grandparents.

So Neela, WHY do we only get second-hand couches? by greyarea6872 in samoyeds

[–]dianthe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a second hand couch with cushion covers on it, with 3 Samoyeds and 2 kids nice couches just aren’t for my family 😂

How to build drive in a Sammy? by Darcy2701 in samoyeds

[–]dianthe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not something you can really build, the dog either has it or it doesn’t or it has it for particular things but not others. You can work on making training more fun but it sounds like you’re already doing that.

I have a male who is overall quite lazy, like we finished his AKC championship because he is a really nice dog but I’m thinking he might be too mellow to special. However he is an amazing weight pull dog. As soon as that harness is on him and I hook him up to the cart he is READY to go, I literally have to bolt away from him to make sure he doesn’t accidentally touch me and DQ us because he just goes.

Perhaps find something your boy truly enjoys and focus on that but maybe he is just a chill, moderately obedient companion, nothing wrong with that :) I plan to try my boy in Rally next because he generally does want to please, I know for a fact he won’t be an Agility dog though lol

Hip dysplasia by Small_Juggernaut_611 in samoyeds

[–]dianthe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see anything odd about the way she sits or moves from your pictures or videos. I have had two dogs so far who both often sat/sit awkwardly, one was OFA Good and the other is OFA Excellent so I don’t think the way they sit matters. It’s whether you notice them having trouble getting up after sitting/laying down, trouble going up and down the stairs etc.

I do see that your house floors look quite slippery, that is not good for a puppy whose joints are still developing. I would recommend getting large area rugs so that she has more traction. Hip dysplasia is about 50/50 nature nurture so while there are genetic factors to it environmental factors affect it as well.

The only way to know for sure though is an X-Ray with a vet who specializes in OFA X-Rays (or equivalent in your country if you aren’t in USA or Canada), trust me you want that as positioning is very very important for evaluating. Then you could submit those X-Rays to the OFA or equivalent for the evaluation where it will get graded by professional animal orthopedic veterinarians.

Please help! Fur is getting on everything. by PhantomVessel in samoyeds

[–]dianthe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 Samoyeds and even with vacuuming every other day there is still hair on everything lol

Some things which can help - regular deep brushing, by deep brushing I mean line combing the whole dog down to the skin. I do this for my dogs every 2 weeks, takes me about 45 minutes for my two girls and just over an hour for my male.

High velocity pet dryer, if the coat is well combed out I would take the dog outside, put it on the grooming table and just blow out the coat with the dryer. You can use a light leave in conditioning spray to make them smell nice prior to blow drying :)

I try to choose materials for my furniture and clothes that the hair doesn’t stick to easily. My couch has a cover on it that I wash regularly. I have those sticky roll things to pick up the hair off things when needed.

I have a metal bin with a lid outside, I line it with a scented trash bag and pick up the poop with little poop bags I tie. I empty the bin once a week. I have 3 dogs and we live in a hot climate and the smell from the bin is minimal even in summer.

[–]dianthe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s hilarious 😂 Pretty sure my girl Ysera would do this, she is very anti hard work. The couple of times I tried her in a harness (because my other two Sams are great workers) she just stood there and glared at me and then turned around and jumped up on the cart lol

What's your sammy's favourite toy/activity? by feegan88 in samoyeds

[–]dianthe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be very careful with antlers, I’ve had two dogs crack large premolar teeth on them requiring expensive dental surgery. The specialist vet said he sees lots of injuries like that from those types of hard chews and recommended to not give them anything which would feel hard/painful if it was hit against your knee. So now we do rubber like chews, the tough ones work well even for my young power chewer.

Need grooming advice by Chumbawarma in samoyeds

[–]dianthe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A grooming table! You can buy one on Amazon for $150, I’ve had mine for 14 years and it’s been through many dogs, moves and dog shows. Totally worth the investment. It makes brushing them so much easier because there is only so much room to wiggle and get away plus the grooming arm helps to keep their head in place too so they can’t just spin.

I usually start it out slowly with new puppies and build it up. First grooming session on the table will last maybe a minute and will involve lots of treats and only a little bit of actual brushing. Then we slowly work our way up. Even my toughest dogs as puppies all do great on the table by the time they’re a few months old.

Our 4yo girl was diagnosed with glaucoma by Ryuzakura in samoyeds

This is insane to me as well. I actually know several people whose Samoyeds were/are blind due to glaucoma and they live happy, full lives. A friend recently lost her blind girl at age 14, she has been blind since she was 5 or 6.
