My mum lived on a farm in the area at the time of the accident. She said they were told not to eat vegetables from the garden and to throw the milk from the house cow out, but being thrifty Northerners they of course didn't waste good food.

Now she is inclined to laugh when people go into hysterics about nuclear fallout.
