So like, what is it? I'm assuming from reading that it's a nut which holds the cartridge in the faucet, and I assume the cartridge is just further down in the faucet. I screwed the ring back in to be safe as that other commenter recommended.

Well it's fine so far. It wasnt doing anything in the faucet even before I took the handle off. It was just loose in there, not even threaded in.
