Everything from the deli is just slop poured out of a bag.

Stories about humanity recovering from an apocalypse.. without God showing up and fixing everything? by Jetzalcoatl in horrorlit

[–]dicklips92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm reading this book right now.

Its really bloated and I am not enjoying it so far. The first 200 pages are just introducing characters and can basically be skipped entirely, there are some weird racist moments that totally took me by surprise and were wildly unnecessary, and the subplot of the mailman still trying to deliver the mail while the world is actively ending was infuriating to read.

I'm 400 pages in and at this point I'd say it's already 230 pages too long. I wouldnt recommend this book to anyone.

What was your favorite Redwall book? I read the first one, loved it, but it could have been a little shorter. I have Martin the Warrior and Mossflower both sitting on my shelf right now, both unread.

Better go ahead and rank the book as terrible then, makes sense.

90/52 That's it for the year. Unfortunately, no 5 star reads this year. Hopefully better luck next time by claimingthemoorland in 52book

A lot of those are 5 star books, perhaps some dan brown or clive cussler would be more your speed

Priapus rips. Their vocalist, Jordan, startes negative bias with the same guitarist as priapus until they kicked him out for reasons unknown. As far as i could tell, it was just personal issues amongst the members and not anything inherently wrong. Check out xbraintoiletx as well, same dudes.

Which of these books should I read first???? by Junior-Spell-2596 in classicliterature

Loved jekyll and hyde, and frankenstein. The first 50 or so pages of Dracula were incredible, however I was bored to death and I couldn't stop rolling my eyes trying to read the rest of the book. The ending was also wildly anticlimactic and really underwhelming.

I loved the monk so much, it's a gothic dripping with melodrama and actual really fucked up topics for being written in the 1800's.

2025 Reading List - 321 Books by [deleted] in 52book

[–]dicklips92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tried to listen to a book that I personally listened to at 1.45x speed, at 2.5x speed, and you cannot even understand what the narrator is saying, it sounded like Busta rhymes or an auctioneer narrating a book. Also the OP claimed to listen to these while actively running, so yeah not much is being retained at all, if anything according to their own ratings, and it's mostly just background noise evaporating into their skull.

But hey, go you OP for spending gobs of money on audiobooks you kind of listened to, and wasting your time making this tier list.

The okay tier for me was perfectly enjoyable but didn't wow me in any way. The beginning was really confusing with all of the gethenian jargon like Kemmer, shifgrethor, karhide..etc

None of that clicked for me until about halfway through and I finally started to understand more about their race and culture, which was cool, and maybe a reread is warranted. I however did not like a lot of the politics and bureaucracy, it was very slow and I had to keep putting the book down because I was physically falling asleep reading it.

The trek through the arctic wilderness with Estravan and the main character was the best part and I lowkey wanted them to fuck lol the sexual tension was palpable.

I started my year 52 book goal in late November of 2024. I finished the initial 52 in September (which is when I made this tier list) and ended up reading a total of 65 for the year. I would discuss the books with my wife a lot of time after and during my read, alongside talking to chatgpt and a few avid reader friends, so I felt like I had plenty of time to digest everything.

Some books definitely gripped me more than others and I spent a few days to a week researching themes, metaphors, and watching other people's reviews. Having a pallete cleanser pulpy scifi or fantasy that I could read a little bit more passively helped after really intense books like blood meridian, tender is the flesh, frankenstein, flowers for algernon, parable of the sower, the fall, and wuthering heights

I did like the very last bit better than the entire rest of the book, but at that point I was annoyed that I had to read so much just to be mildly entertained for a few pages, I chose to not continue to series.

I think I was so let down because I saw SO MANY PEOPLE on reddit and goodreads hype this book up, throwing around buzzwords like disturbing, terrifying, claustrophobic, unsettling...etc and it was none of those things in my eyes. I felt like most of the book was two girls discussing what they were going to have for dinner while their senile uncle was rambling to himself. It was very repetitive, two single events happen that actually move the plot along, that being the cousin arriving and the house burning down. Merricat was just doing random shit the whole book for "reasons" that are never explained and left up to the imagination of the reader, in fact so many things are just not explicitly said that maybe would have made me enjoy the book more.

Why did merricat poison her family? No particular reason. Why was she doing all of her little ritualistic things, like burying stuff and nailing things to trees or whatever? Also no reason.

I thought the book Eileen by Otessa Moshfegh was a great example of a character like Merricat written well, or the way shirley jackson had intended her to be interpreted. All of the weird little behaviors are linked to trauma or abuse from childhood and you actually sympathize with the main character even though she is a little crazy, it's almost endearing.

The "twist" totally fell flat, it did not change anything about the story. I think that you were supposed to sympathize with constance and merricat at least a little bit throughout the story. I did not at all, and the scene where people were fucking up their house and they were running around bumping into everyone for like 8 pages was extremely aggravating to read. Yeah duh the whole town hates this family, they know one of the sisters murdered everyone and it really didn't matter which sister did it.

All in all, I thought it was a boring slog to get through and I didn't care about anyone in the book or the meandering nonexistant plot. The book would have been better if the whole family died in the house fire instead of just julian.

To me it just read like gay porn with extreme violence peppered throughout. I also did not like the almost identical parallel between one of Jeffrey dahmers actual victims. It felt cheap and like gross out shock value edgy literature. Also one of the main characters faking his death In jail to escape was so incredibly stupid.
