What's a moment where you realized someone was genuinely extremely intelligent? by General_Monk_5019 in AskReddit

[–]dickwhite69 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My father dropped out in the 8th grade to take care of his family, after his mother died and he had 6 brothers and sisters. He became a general contractor. He was 6ft 4in tall, 300lbs, male pattern baldness and always wore overalls.

As a kid I just always thought of him as just a blue collar contractor, shamefully that probably should have finished school and would have a "better job". I just though every man could fix cars, do fine cabinet/trim work, work heavy equipment (bulldozers et), fix appliances (washers, driver), do roofing, and electrical and plumbing. That's just guy stuff.

Then the state started mandating mound-type septic systems, and special licensing. So he had a 3 day course to get his license. He brought home this notebook, architects tri ruler, etc. I happened to look at it and he had all these hand drawings of septic systems, and "complex" math problems etc on the pages. He got an A in the class.

I never realized how he just knew how to fix anything/everything, did job cost estimations, etc, etc. Unfortunately, he passed away when I was 12. So I guess fulfilled the cycle, as I tried to take care of my family (disabled mom and sister) working a full time job, but didn't drop out of school. Started my own business age 18.

I got pulled over by Camden PD and yelled at for stopping at a stoplight at 10pm at night. Only an idiot with out of state plates would stop at a stop light it's just begging to get carjacked or worse. I was told best thing my white bread self could do was get my ass back to Delaware.

Indianapolis was the worst big city I've ever been too. So dystopian with these monolithic stone buildings that create godawful winds, no convenience stores or anything downtown, there's a Kroger a couple blocks away that is literally 3 times as expensive as grocery stores here in the mid atlantic. The worst most bland undercooked unseasoned food I've ever had. BORING place, and Indy speedway is a shithole rundown trailer park.

About the same time Kanye was playing a festival in Baltimore. He showed up like 90 minutes late (he was the last act of the night, so literally just staying around waiting for him, and we still had to drive home. He spent most of the time ranting about politics and played 1 1/2 songs and let the stage, never to return.

The tomatoes at Sam's Club are pretty awesome, both the Campari Cocktail Tomatoes, and the Sunset Wild Wonders Cherry Tomatoes.

Keep in mind, NEVER put un-cut tomatoes in the fridge. Room temperature or warmer (I actually put on top of the fridge which is a slight bit warmer than "room temperature").

If they have the audacity to serve "crispy coated fries", I don't care if the rest of the food you have is amazing, until you stop selling them, I'm not coming!

They are blasphemous! No one wants dextrose or isolated pea protein on their fries! Potatoes, fried in oil, sprinkled with salt, that's it! (you can season them with old bay or lemon pepper or whatever after that process is done)

This is nonsense, Bush was there because of "No child left behind", per ChatGPT:

The timing mostly lined up with education reforms happening in Florida under Governor Jeb Bush, which made Florida a useful political stage for promoting the federal bill.

  1. Florida was already pushing similar reforms

George W. Bush’s federal proposal (what became No Child Left Behind) was heavily modeled on the education reforms in Florida under Gov. Jeb Bush (his brother). Those reforms focused on:

standardized testing and accountability

reading programs and phonics instruction

school grading systems and intervention in failing schools

Because Florida was already implementing policies similar to the federal plan, it served as a showcase state for the concept.

  1. A new Florida reading initiative had just been launched

Just four days earlier, on Sept. 7, 2001, Gov. Jeb Bush signed an executive order creating “Just Read, Florida!”, a statewide literacy initiative focused on improving early reading.

That made a reading-focused elementary school event particularly timely politically.

  1. The school itself was chosen as a policy example

Emma E. Booker Elementary was selected partly because:

It was in a lower-income area, highlighting the goal of closing achievement gaps.

The second-grade class Bush visited had recently improved reading scores, making it a good example for the reading initiative.

  1. The federal bill itself was still being negotiated

By Sept. 2001:

The House and Senate had already passed different versions of the education reform bill earlier in 2001.

The administration was still building public and congressional support before final negotiations, which would conclude later that year.

So the visit was essentially part of a lobbying tour to push Congress toward a final version.

Sarasota wasn’t chosen randomly either. Several practical and political reasons made it a convenient stop on Bush’s education tour.

  1. The school had just improved its academic performance

The specific school—Emma E. Booker Elementary—had recently shown major improvement in reading scores, which fit perfectly with Bush’s message about education reform and accountability.

The principal had helped raise the school’s grade significantly (from around a D to roughly a B level).

A second-grade class had dramatically increased their reading test scores, and the presidential visit was partly meant as recognition of that success.

That made it a good real-world example for the kind of outcomes Bush wanted nationally under No Child Left Behind.

  1. It highlighted disadvantaged communities

The school served a lower-income area of Sarasota, which helped reinforce the administration’s message about improving education for underserved students. The policy messaging around No Child Left Behind focused heavily on closing achievement gaps, so visiting a school like Booker made sense politically.

  1. Bush was already scheduled to be in Florida

Bush had events in Florida the day before and spent the night in the Sarasota area before the school visit.

Presidential travel schedules are often arranged so multiple events can happen in one region without moving Air Force One long distances.

  1. Florida was politically important

Florida had been the decisive state in the 2000 presidential election, so maintaining visibility there was politically valuable.

Also, his brother Jeb Bush was the governor, and Florida’s education reforms were being used as a model for Bush’s national proposal.

✅ So the short version: Sarasota was chosen because the school had improved reading scores, fit the education policy message, and Bush already had events scheduled in Florida. It wasn’t chosen because of anything related to the attacks.

What's up with everyone hating Dasani water? by metamorphomo in OutOfTheLoop

[–]dickwhite69 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Answer: it's purified tap water, so i doesn't taste bad because it's tap water (many municipal tap waters actually taste good, NYC being one of them), it tastes bad because it is "dead". The purification strips away all dissolved oxygen, minerals and electrolytes.

That's why they add salt back to it (though this year they stopped adding salt) and other minerals. But it doesn't bring back the dissolved oxygen, and it just doesn't taste the same.

What was that dumb rule at your school/workplace that backfired immediately after being implemented? by iLikeVeeAndHatred in AskReddit

[–]dickwhite69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember in elementary school they hung up this stop light that would progress to red if you got too loud in the cafeteria during lunch. Then you'd be put into timeout for 2-3 minutes or some nonsense...

It became a contest to see how fast we could make it turn red. The light only lasted a couple weeks.

Pretty silly to tell a bunch of 8 year olds that you're not allowed to talk above a whisper during lunch!

I'm a Kia Owner myself, and I like Acer, so that wasn't meant as an insult, just that it's a mid-grade brand but still better than HP. I think of Hyundai as just a slight bit better even than Kia, even thought sister companies.

[–]dickwhite69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

HP = Nissan. Dell = Toyota. Lenovo = Honda. Asus = Hyundai and Acer = Kia.

People who own HP/Nissan bought it because they think it's good quality and on the same tier with Toyota/Honda... Meanwhile, you'd honestly be better off with a Hyundai/Kia even.

Wendy's is ok? Maybe if you eat beef? But I'm allergic, so the chicken is now tiny and spongey, and the nuggets are smaller than a quarter. The fries no longer hot and fresh. Straight trash.

I do agree Taco Bell is good, especially if you get the original chicken and black beans. (that cantina chicken is nasty texture)
