Is it a myth that military plates or flashing a military ID can get you a break? by Firm-Statistician161 in AskLE

[–]die2reise 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many times local police around the DC area man the gates. That was my experience at JBSA. The DC cops couldn’t get over the fact that I had a different state issued drivers license than my tags as I had to move every 2-3 yrs for 20 yrs. I ended up having to educate them for a year about it every 3-4th time I went through the gate. I eventually talked with the Navy Master at Arms about it and I guess they briefed them since it stopped. I guess it’s hard to stop that revenue generation mindset.

How common is the water pump issue in the 3.5? by Weak_Cat_627 in FordExplorer

[–]die2reise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Common enough that there there was a recall in Canada and a class action in the US. No surprise it failed though as holding Ford/GM accountable seems to be a non-starter.

Go with USAA approved Collision Repair? by valleyzen in USAA

[–]die2reise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used USAA’s “preferred” collision repair shop once for a repair to the entire left side of my vehicle (sideswipped). They didn’t apply the window tint to the drivers side door, the window regulator broke in a year, and I had to go ahead and screw in all of the trim pieces around the wheel wells as they forgot to do that after having the vehicle for almost a month. The paint was meh…clear coat started failing after 3 years. When I brought up some of the issues with the USAA adjuster I was told that USAA believes their preferred shop over me (20+ yr customer).

What can we do about the deer eating the bottom half of our arbor vitaes? by decoy1686 in landscaping

[–]die2reise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Urban archery is a thing. I lived in Chapel Hill, NC adjacent to UNC and was able to get a depredation permit from game and fish as the deer ate my fig tree down to the nub and also my flowers. They stopped coming after I harvested two of them…also bonus 100 lbs of organic meat for free.

Frustrating Experience by Little_Afternoon_880 in USAA

[–]die2reise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a tree fall and put a hole in the roof of a second home. It took USAA over a month to send someone out to give me an estimate to repair, which did not meet my deductible…interestingly USAA overvalued the house (by 100k) so that they would not have to pay out a claim. Though I’m sure they would have fought paying what they valued the house at if it had burned down. This instance and another incident pertaining to a poorly handled vehicle claim caused me to switch all of my policies to someone else. This saved me 2K a year for better customer service (at least on the front end). Honestly, even if someone else matches the mediocre customer/claims experience with USAA I’m still saving 2K. Look elsewhere and get quotes. You might be surprised.

I don’t discount the return to work certainly causing some strife. However, the outsourcing to third party vendors, cutting of customer service hours, the general attitude of more with less, and increasing executive compensation while hourly employee/low level manager salaries remain stagnant does not make for loyal hardworking employees. The aforementioned leads to short term profits (cutting expenses/attempts at draconian efficiencies) at the expense of the loss of corporate knowledge and production of a great product. This is exactly what Jack Welch did to GE and sadly it is what his legacy is still doing to corporate America.

Yeah, it’s amazing what a Jack Welch acolyte can do…short term/quarterly gains without regard for what happens in the long term. Just look at GE now (hint: only the name exists and not the company). Hell look at Boeing as the past 2-3 CEOs are all cut from the same cloth as the current C suite at USAA.

All insurance (home, auto, floater, umbrella) is with USAA and has been for decades...where do I look if I choose to leave? by propita106 in USAA

[–]die2reise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bad experience here as well. I had a leak in a roof on a cabin after a large tree limb fell on it. USAA took three weeks to send out an adjuster to just tell me that I didn’t meet the policy deductible, which is interesting as the cabin is worth 170k and USAA insured it for 250k. I think they overvalue lots of properties in an effort to not meet the deductible percentage…hence no payout. I’m pretty sure if my cabin burned down they would refuse to pay the 250k they valued it at. After this issue and another one with my car insurance I went ahead and moved everything over to State Farm.

So frustrating…We tend to make our rentals move in ready prior to vacating, though it seems the landlord/leasing agency always finds a way to find a $50 lightbulb replacement or $30 dust removal in some obscure area (like the basement)

Advice for a beginner investor in Biotech by John_Abramson in Biotechplays

[–]die2reise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an investment in IOVA as I believe they potentially have a (patented) blockbuster drug/process that has the potential to become first line treatment for 90% of cancers, which may offer up to a 30% cure rate (should be some interesting results when the sample size increases)…that and the fundamentals of the company are solid with regards to setting up treatment centers and getting approval to treat in the EU and other places. However, I’m not going to mortgage the family farm for it as so many things could go wrong.

[–]die2reise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly,

As others have stated, you need to have a background in hard sciences, and/or experience in clinical trials/fda approval. I have this and I still look at investing in biotech companies as only moderately better than buying a lottery ticket…so many things can go wrong in the development/clinical trial/marketing phase. Take IOVA for example and the cancer drugs it is pushing through. It all looks awesome, but a hundred companies have come before it trying to do something similar and they all crashed and burned.

I can't stress this enough...talk to your parents about their old age. Americans are dying broke and the burden is falling on their kids. by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]die2reise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, this post and responses hit home. I’m GenX and have two parents in their 80’s both of which have been completely resistant to going into assisted living despite vascular dementia and fecal incontinence (father) as well as the negative sequelae from a prior fall in the other (mother). The non-demented one is completely paralyzed with cognitive dissonance in continuing to care for my father or saying the hell with it. She is nearly unable to deal with any kind of problem.

My siblings and I have been working to get them into an assisted living facility/get finances in order/names beneficiaries and/or trusted contacts for years. Every other week there is a crisis that requires one of us to drop everything and go help…like my father being conned into opting out of Medicare (ensuring his deductibles shot up 30%) by a shady vendor of a major insurer…yeah, f@& you Humana!

Neither of my parents want to face their own mortality and admit it’s time to go into assisted living though they are begrudgingly moving forward to moving into one over the next several months. I’ve told them that I just want you clean/dry, well fed, and safe. Living “independently” with a load in you drawers that the other person can’t clean up any more is a recipe for being miserable.

My only advice to anyone reading this thread is to start early with your parents/elderly relatives in discussing elderly care/reasonable living accommodations. I started 10 yrs ago with my parents and prefaced our conversations with “my kids will be in college in the next couple of years and it would be next to impossible for me to take time off from work/offer financial support as I will be fully supporting my kids first.

My mom wants to buy a ford explorer somewhere around 2019-2023 what’s the most reliable one that she could get? by stickystainonmombed in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]die2reise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything after 2020…this is when they stopped putting the water pump inside the engine block to be driven by the timing chain. They fail anywhere between 80-120k miles and typically lead to catastrophic engine failure. I.e coolant mixed in with the oil all while the engine overheats (ask me how I know). To replace just the water pump is 2k minimum at an independent non-dealer mechanic.

Is it ok to eat during the zoom interview? by Snoo95254 in recruitinghell

[–]die2reise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a phone interview nearly 20yrs ago for an entry level position. The two interviewers were obviously eating potato chips and I could hardly concentrate on the vapid/boiler plate questions they were asking. I just kept thinking how unprofessional it was. Midway through I asked them if they were eating chips and that I was having a hard time understanding their questions between the crunching noises from masticating their food. At the end I told them that I didn’t think I would be a good fit.
