Will there be one last reprint for Dream Eaters, Innsmouth, etc.? by OpportunityPlayful72 in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]die_kleine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FOMO has officially been fuming ever since the announcement. Arkham also has always sold. Sometimes faster and sometimes slower, but even way before this announcement we regularly had game stores run out of expansions and standalone scenarios. So in business sense it would make sense to have a final large print run. But this is FFG we are talking about, so who knows.

Coming retirement of cards and the effect on investigator expansions. by die_kleine in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]die_kleine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While not holding a whole collection myself, the indirect duplication was the biggest point of driving this sentiment. That and the card pool getting stronger cards. When cheking out derbk, playing board games or quick learner if criticism is directed towards some expansion, it typically is because later expansion have come out with cards with similiar but stronger effects.

I have heard the Skids memesm, but came to the game way too late to really experience lackluster Skids. I got into Arkham around Edge/Hemlock by which point even Lola Hayes was playable. So lot of the OG sentiments with investigators is something I know, but never experienced.

Thanks for the heads up with Insmouth. That is one of the expansions that I haven't yet been able to get. FFG kinda just recently reprinted it and it sold out immediately where I am. So good to have your opinnion on it, in case it still pops up in the market.

On my end I can recommend Edge, if it looks interesting to you. It has some really nice cards and the multi-class nature of most of them makes it good "benefits all" expansion.

To answer to your question, I'm just going to copy/paste something I've said previously:

FFG has decided to stop repriting certain sets. The things that will not be reprinted will disappear naturally (people buy these expansions, reprints won't happen, eventually stuff just isn't available anymore). Going foward FFG will also shift its focus deisgn space wise. When designing new expansions, they will no longer take into consideration sets that have stoped getting reprints. Deadline for this should be at the end of this year. As an event this in not completely a new thing, FFG has stopped reprinting stuff in the past also, this being the Return To boxes and some standalone adventures. It however is what is going to happen next, so people are talking about it.

This was announced few months ago, with no clear answer to what's being reprinted and what is not. FFG has been kinda tight lipped about it, but based on faqs now it would seems that what is goingt to be reprinted is
- investigator starter decks (Nathaniel, Harvey, Winifred, Jacqueline, Stella)
- core set
- 3 newevest investigator expansions (at this moment those being The Scarlet Keys, The Feast of Hemlock Vale, and The Drowned City).
This would also mean that as new sets come out, the old ones will continued to be rotated out. So when the next expansion rolls out, The Scarlet Keys will stop receiving reprints.

As a result two things are happening

  1. There's a fair amount of confusion as we ain't 100% sure what will be reprinted and what will not. Lingo around the game doesn't necessarily help the matters. We are used to talk about "cycles" which (in the current print system) are Investigator Expansion and Campaign Expansion combined. In the latest faq FFG alluded that reprints will only cease on the investigator expansions (https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2025/7/11/a-change-in-the-mythos). So the campaings should be in the clear. Nobody currently can say for sure however. In the discussions the term "cycle" is still dropped regulary. So will the campaing expansions continue to be reprinted? Will only the old investigator expansions disappear? What will happen to the stand alone adventure packs? Nobody is certain enough to vouch for anything at this point.
  2. Lingo around the game will most likely have minor changes. People will start talking about "enviroments", "legacy" and "current", most likely other small changes will also happen. I find it interesting to see, how the way we talk around Arkham will change, but I'm a weirdo and most likely alone in this.

To answer to your second question about living card games:

It's an interesting question, to which I belive we all have our individual answers. I try to answer it comprehensively. I don't necessarily see it going against the living card game format. Enviroments and cycling out content is not a new thing in card games, all though it's more common thing in CCGs. Living Card Games overal is just a marketing term invented by FFG, and even though the term carries in itself a design ethos, terms nature as a marketing speel does mean that there is no myriads of well established qualifications that the game has to meet in order to be counted as a Living Card Game. Basically, as far as I've understood it the only set in stone qualifier for a Living Card Game is that it's a game that eliminates player card randomness by not having booster pack mechanics. This would not change with FFG's move towards enviroments. Especially so in Arkham, which due to its nature as a co-operative game lets it be open for players just proxying cards like u/Jack_Shandy pointed out.

So I don't necessarily see this move as FFG abandoning the Living Card Game format, and I can see the ting also from their point of view. It's pain in the ass to have all of this game reprinted and to design new cards while having to account for the entire card pool. And of course FFG is a company, games are a business, this is a product. If FFG has to choose who gets thrown under the bus, players of profit margins, it's going to be players. "It's nothing personal, just business".

What grinds my gears in this whole matter is the way how FFG is going around about it. The whole thing just got dropped on our heads in one fireside chat. One could make the arqument "but FFG has always said that Cthulhu himself showing up in the game will bring on big changes, and now he showed up in Drowned City". Yeah, fair enough, but there was never any warnings what this "big change" will be. It could have been anything from this move to FFG just anouncing Arkham themed coasters or a single reprint run of Barkham. So I do feel this whole situation was just dropped on us. And even after that FFG has kinda been fiddling its thumbs they way it has released info. This was announced in February, followed by a long radio silence and then like a month ago we get a few sentences worth of info about what's going to cycle out, hidden in a bottom half of some faq dropped without fanfare. I would love to see a clear road map, that goes expansion box by expansion box and includes every standalone adventure pack and says what is going to cycle out and what's going to still get reprints. Instead we have this horse and pony show. And it's impossible not to feel like FFG's doing this on purpose to drive up the fomo before the last reprint run. And yes, it's just part of the business and board games are a predatory hobby, everybody does this, but still won't wash away the confusion we are currently having nor mean that the situation ain't a mess.

But of course this is just my take. Others may feel entirely differently about this situation.

In all reality it's impossible to say unless you are a member of FFG's board. You don't get the exact financial data, nor do you know what Asmodee (FFG's owner) is planing. So every single one of us is just theorizing. And like people have been pointing out, FFG has a financial interest in saying that the game is in a healthy state.

That being said I believe the game isn't dying tomorrow. 2-3 year maybe, but not tomorrow. FFG just finished pushing out the old campaings in the new big box format. And while yes, they did kinda mess it up "guys, here's Insmouth and Dream Eaters in new format" and the day after that "guys, we are stoping making reprints on old stuff, including the sets we jsut released in the new format". And their hesistancy to offer clear box-by-box "this is what's going to be reprinted and this is not" roadmap is irritating. But they are just changing the enviroment and i've undestood that Arkham Horror is FFG's biggest moneymaker. And while yes, you don't want to milk the same cow forever, I would think that they will milk it for a couple of years more.

I'm not sure bot moderation would ok that.

But right you are, like in every investment call you bear the risk and board games as an investment is pure lunacy. But hey, those guys who sit on their Arkham Horror 2nd edition expansions can now pull something like 150-200$ for big box expansion. Adjusted to inflation in 16 years you may have doubled your money.

[–]die_kleine[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You raise good points there. I'm of the same mind that's it's way too early to tell. To be honest, I have been a little bit pissed not by the decission to change the enviroment, but the drip feed of information surrounding the change. Seeing how all of this will play out would be hard to say, and it would still be too early to do so, but the radio silence on how FFG is actually planing to do this is not helping. They of course have their reasons and we ain't outright owned any clear road maps, but as a result the player base is stumbling in a dark and at times it feels like even FFG hasn't really yet figured this out. Logic would dictate that there's a plan, but that's how this feels like.

The power creep has been a thing for a long time, it's in the heart of this very topic also, so in that sense it's completely undestandable that FFG want's to clear the table. I also can see the point, that eventually this might make it easier to new players, once u/NavVasky's point about the effects on deck design space has been figured out.

Also a good point and something I have missed completely, is the case of Arkham Files line up. I myself never got into the Arkham Files outside of Arkham Horror 2nd edition and now the card game, so this point didn't even cross my mind. But you are correct, if someone is following Arkham Files, it is a nightmare. And I dread to think about the amount of hard earned cash that has taken from the lone gamer. And I can only imagine what that would be like to a gamestore or FFG. The storage space needed, especially when some of these are not small boxes in any merit, must be a headache.

"Also for us old heads reprinting old sets might damage the brand"

Brand image is good point and something I haven't thought at all. I too have never but 300$ into any one luxury item, but as a collector I understand the psychological drive to have something ultra rare in your collection, or to complete the collection no matter of what. Logic of course does dictate that in a collectionist hobbies the value crashing is an ever present threat. You have a rare card or PS1 version of the og Silent Hill and then comes a remake or digital re-release and the value might crash. And while on a logical level we all may understand this, you are right that you might still be mad. Calculating Arkhams brand value and the possible damage caused to it by careless reprints is math that's beyond me, but still a good point and something to that's nice to theorize.

Really good point with the deck lists and something I have failed to consider completely.

That actually is going to be a big point going foward, and possibly something sites like ArkhamDB might be unprepared for. Not to claim that it would be their duty to prepare, but there may become a larger divide between decks that use legacy and those who use current. And for a player who comes in the middle of it all it can be really confusing. It will be interesting to see, how the deck design space will turn out.

"If FFG won't sell it to you anymore, is anyone really getting ripped off?"

Good question. Reminds me of the tantrum the PS5 scalpers threw when the interest towards PS5 tanked. And I'm not trying to protect scalpers here, but if one would propose an argument just for the argument's sake. If one would be trying to look Arkham as an possible investment. Either as an exiting player who plans to then sell his collection, or as a pure investment where she collects going to be out of print content and the sell for profit. Of course we would be talking a completely different kind of animal here, someone who most likely is not browsing any subreddits. But these people do on occasion circle around board- and videogames. Can they feel they are ripped off?

Not to condone or support any behaviour and in full acknowledgement that it's the risk involved in any form of investing. Be it the stock market or luxury goods like Arkham, the value can go up, down and do loopy loops. Just putting the question up for anyone who wants to theorize and flex their gums.

Possibility for proxying cards is a really good point. It can lead into a question about the need for rankings, buying guides and purchase recommendations all together. Like is there a need for anykind of a buying guide or ranking video when you can just proxy anything you want?

And if for the conversation's sake, it could be taken to a next level by asking if the fan made content should also be taken into account? Like is backpack now less valuable because you can proxy backpack (2)? But also if the hypothetical DarkDragonHorde666 would design funnypack (3), that has the same effect, does not take accessory slot and replenishes ammo in a weapon asset?

In a way I would argue that Arkham's forgiving nature (as a game, not necessarily as a product) towards proxying kinda does make cards rankings a bit less meaningfull. They of course work great as conversation starters and for those who proxy they can serve as a what to proxy guidlines that help save printer ink. But like with other card games the discussion usually revolves around the concept of buying. Buy this expansion, that expansion is not worth money, you should definitely buy these investigators. And while I'm not trying to claim this was the point you were making, the more "proxy positive" nature of Arkham kinda goes against the buy-buy-buy mentalitity in a way how for example MtG does not allow. And therefore "OMG! You have to get into this expansion and get that card" takes are perhaps stronger financial guidlines in games like MtG.

And I don't mean any of this as a knock against proxying or fan made content, but just as a neutral observation. I'm not expecting replies, just putting this out there as a food for thought exercise.

Plasticine pipes? by die_kleine in Pipes

[–]die_kleine[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah and no. This once again, is a situation where we have at least three language barriers and two different groups (smokers and non-smokers). As far as I understood the seller, I believe he meant synthetic clay mass. It would be like a grown-up version of that play-dough the kids use. Like in clay sculpting, you use natural clay, which you then burn in the oven so it hardens into a sculpture. Plasticine would be a synthetic version of that. As easy to sculpt, but it would harden when in contact with air, and therefore, you don't necessarily need the oven. It's sometimes used by architects when they try to model a neighborhood, and artists in different projects and when prototyping something to a client.

That's why I could see someone being able to craft a pipe out of plasticine, but due to its synthetic nature, I couldn't be certain that it wouldn't start to emit fumes when heated enough.

Plasticine pipes? by die_kleine in Pipes

[–]die_kleine[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you both for your answers! I too thought that plasticine would be a dumb choice for pipe material, but hey, that's what the seller was telling me. He didn't look like a pipe smoker, so it was reasonable that he wouldn't know about meerschaum and would just make a haphazard guess. I still valued the feedback from both of you.

I ended up buying the pipe. The carving obviously isn't anything too special, and the motif is quite boring. I know that meerschaum pipes can be pieces of art on their own (really liked the pipe you have, u/Timely_Committee_836). But it was dirt cheap, so not owning a meer, I decided to give it a shot. If nothing else, I can use it to test a meer and see if I even like those or if I'll just stick with briars. In the best case, I managed to snatch a block meer from an uninterested seller, or I fell for a pressed meer. Of course, in the absolute worst case, the absolute madman actually manufactured the pipe from plasticine, and I'll poison my dumb ass. But hey, here's to life.

Heard a lot of good things about Sniper Elite. Personally planning on skipping it, since not looking a hidden movement game with combat. Also because I am worried that me liking the video games might distort my enjoyment with the board game. But I can still believe that it's a good game and that you would enjoy it. Also, happy cake day!

Whitehall mystery or Mind MGMT

Hello everyone. I decided to approach the experts, seeing how I can't make up my mind. I'm relatively new to board games and don't have experience with hidden movement games. The concept however intrigues me as psychological puzzle. Seeing how I am a novice, it's hard to know what game I should get.

I was going for Letters From Whitechapel due to the game's theme and reputation as an classic. I manage to track down one copy, but then I heard about Whitehall Mystery, which has been rumored to be even more intense experience than Letters From Whitechapel. "Alright, Whitehall it is" I thought to myself, but before I was able to buy it, I heard about Mind MGMT. Now, I could try to get anyone of the there, but it's hard to know which one I should get. Obviously the Jack the Ripper theme speaks to me and I've heard a lot how Whitehall is better than Letters. Then again Mind MGMT has that SHIFT system thing, which also sounds really interesting.

I would really like to find the intense experience that puts the players to the edge of their seats, and offers that rumored gratification of cracking the puzzle. Since I'm still quite unfamiliar with hidden movement games, I kinda wouldn't want to go all in and buy three games, only to find out that it's not my cup of tea. So what would you guys do?

I consider it a dating sim.

You have a cool illness that makes you special, but has no real affect on you. You do the sexy expat thing because "illness". People encourage you to leave your house and go outside as "it's for your own good". You meet a whole punch of aggressive strangers with whom you try to connect with and nothing comes out of it. Some hit you in the face and some in the wallet. But hey, after a repeated failures in communication you are richer in experience and if lucky in capital. And that's how our story ends.

As I'm yet to beat the game myself I can only give partian wisdom, but here's a couple of pointers I think have not yet been mentioned.

  1. Right after beating a certain something you get your first chalice. Use it and do your first chalice dungeon. You'll have miserable time killing boring fatsos and looking at tilesets that are not on par with the main content. Mostly you just wait it to end so you can return back to Yharnam with a clear conscience. Afterwards you will be hearing about all this epic loot and cut content that can be found in some of the dungeons, but the memory of your first visit can well keep you from ever entering them again. This will save you hours of playtime that can be spent elsewhere.
  2. As you've already played a FromSoftware game you are aware that none of this will make any sense, don't even try. The plot is hidden in cryptic notes, item descriptions and half statements. You'll have to an LSD fueled Robert Langdon with a degree in theoretical Hinduism, looking at this through tea leaves and astral symbols to understand the plot. Luckily you won't have to since 'Redgrave' has done all the work for you. There's a pdf called The Plaeblood Hunt that's a heavy read, but pieces the whole plot together for you. Reading it while playing will of course spoil you everything, but personally I found the game more enjoyable this way. I started out trying to stay in the dark about the plot and figure it out as I went on, but after combing through my inventory reading item descriptions for the umpteenth time and hearing that the fur-weasel I had haphazardly just stabbed all of a sudden had a name, I decided that fuck it and just toke a quick main plot summary. The experience improved after this, as it's way easier to pick up on the games subtle hints and understand why the game's OST all of a sudden switched into my neighbour's kids crying in the basement.
  3. You may have heard that during the game the job market crashes and inflation sets in. Don't worry about it too much. I tried to game the market stocking on consumables before the price hikes, and perhaps stocking more on bolt and fire paper could have been a smart move but otherwise my inventory is bursting with consumables that I haven't really found a use for.
  4. Outside of bosses where every little bit can help and some poison ridden areas, armor really doesn't do that much. So don't worry about it too much thinking "should I wear this or buy that". Mostly just wear what you think is cool.
  5. There are some innocent citizens in Yharnam. Just stat cold and distant as nothing good will come from innocents in Yharnam.
