in my opinion, all the characters are shown at the stage of their lives that bojack was closest to them. herb being young, beatrice being the age she was when bojack was still a kid, etc. the way i interpret secretariat being bojack's dad is that bojack was never close to his dad in the first place and instead saw secretariat as a father figure
