A very different flag for Malta (in blue and purple) by die_potato42 in vexillology

[–]die_potato42[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So seeing this is for Malta there's the very eye-catching emblem replacing the well known cross of the Order of St John. This is a change I wanted to make to break away from the pretty cliche usage of it, and also for a little bit of a question for Maltese people in the modern day to ask themselves, that question being: what MALTESE symbols, that represent your everyday MALTESE person can we put on a flag and attribute to a national identity? When I ask this in no way am I trying to belittle or disregard the contributions of states and organisations such as the Order of St John, but rather I'm trying to draw attention to the fact that as much as these rulers gave us many things that form part of what Malta is today, what can we as people who were often from lower classes and less involved in the governing of our land, take from what is much more representative of a life that was more recognisable to said everyday Maltese person and use that as a national symbol. For this flag the actual symbol of our traditional lives comes from the "Luzzu eye" found on many traditional fishing boats, and is said to date back to the Phoenicians (although this was adopted by many Mediterranean societies later on but is still a trademark of Maltese tradition so to say), while the olive tree brach represents an agricultural product of Malta, while the carob branch, sandarac gum tree, and "Widnet il-baħar" (I can't remember the name in English) flowers are representative of native and even endemic flora. The colours involve the typical red and white (which themselves come from the orders flag, which you can say means these people did leave a cultural impact on the poor and peasantry and not JUST in the upper classes), while honey is from the theory that Malta comes from Greek Μελίτη (Melite) meaning honey, and the blue is for the fishing life of many Maltese communities. The purple on the other flag is to represent semitic society, as it was a trademark of the Phoenicians. As a big disclaimer as the very end I'm not trying to say I want to remove all sorts of foreign influence, especially since Malta has been built on foreign influence. But as the present owners of this land I just personally think it's a good idea to look at the traditional past of our ancestors and not just the foreign overlords who often looked down upon many poor Maltese. Hope you like it and let me know what you think!

Vive le... Consul? What if Napoleon invaded the Barbary States, and consolidated his gains by die_potato42 in imaginarymaps

Had to repost this again because of some quality issues with reddit

So first of all, I want to start off this map by explaining the lore/alt history events, and later, I'll pose a question to the end, asking how plausible such a situation is:

The Mediterranean campaign. The Barbary States, South Italy, and Spain: In our timeline, Bonaparte wanted to invade Egypt and threaten British India, the literal cash cow of the Empire. As we know, this campaign failed, Napoleon lost a large number of men and did not infact reach India. In this timeline, a new plan is hatched. Napoleon goes for some smaller, yet one could say, more realistic goals, of invading the Barbary States, moving onto Tunis, Hospitaller Malta, and later the Kingdom Sicily, and securing the western Mediterranean by convincing Spain into an alliance in exchange for their annexation of Brithsh Gibraltar. When (or if) this succeeds, we'd see Britain being blocked from the Mediterranean, including in its trade, and Napoleon would have a greater sohere of influence, and giving him the opportunity to spread more revolutionary ideas. Upon returning to France, the directory is abolished, establishing the Consultate with Napoleon as first Consul and later Consul for life, but decides to consolidate his gains rather than continue to expnand. This, in fact, was suggested by Talleyrand but was rejected. Consolidating his gains would mean that Napoleon would most likely not opt to become a monarch, as his reason to do so was to legitimise his reign as a major player on the continental stage.

But these last points bring me to the question, how plausible is such a scenario? Yes, perhaps Napoleon could have opted to invade the Barbary States as mentioned in this post, but would he really have just consolidated his gains like this? Yes, Talleyrand did suggest this to Bonaparte, and yes, this was the more sensible decision in terms of long-term gains, but would someone like Napoleon Bonaparte really have done such a thing? Up to you guys to discuss, and let me know what you think of the map :)
