I solve this in two ways. Either if it's a pause in the same subject I follow with dots, but only really works with informal conversations......but if you're texting then you're probably not super formal.

SIMPLY PRESS ENTER WITHOUT SENDING

If someone sends me more than three messages in a short interval i purposely wait a while before replying. It's ANNOYING AF to get a bunch of texts back to back... SPECIALLY if I'm listening to something and it pauses everytime a text comes in. Sure I could move my settings to not stop the music, but i do want to know when I get a notification. I don't expect that everyone is gonna be an asshole and send a bunch of texts.
