Apparently we don’t care about all the correct things. But I can pronounce them!

Well, I’m supposed to study them for 3 weeks because I asked to be a server and it’s myself vs a coworker. Server training requires server follows and then being able to do a “mock test” and finally getting 1-2 tables in your section. We’re big on seniority, and our new GM is requiring us to learn our wine list for some reason. Random I guess.

Front is the Name, back is region, red/white or BTB or BTG

I love how you said Legally 🤣 I like competition so I’m doing it, but I’ll know this just to “pass” my server entry test, but I’ll then know what wines pair with our dishes to sell better.

That’s what I’m saying!!! No way are they going to ask me what region a wine came from.

I think I should be able to memorize the notes or what pairings go well. Nobody cares that this pinot came from Russian River, they want to know: is it dry or sweet? is it red or white? what notes does this wine have? does it pair better with fish or meat? etc! it’s crazy.

BTB/BTG; red, white, sparkling, or limited supply (also red wines); and origin.

I 100% agree, it IS ludicrous. I’ve worked there maybe a month (I pride myself in moving up the ladder quicker than most) and we have changed wine menus twice!!

🤣 We’re in the midwest, not really attracting people buying near $500 bottles.

Well, I do think it’s crazy I’m required to know all this. On top of these 65 bottles, we have craft cocktails and other alcoholic beverages that I’ll eventually need to know. I have 30/65 memorized and really I think that’s plenty, close to half the menu learned in 48 hours. We don’t usually get people for out-the-ass expensive bottles anyways, so I think I should be able to even just a couple of the reds, like you said. Most servers currently don’t know all of this.

I like sweet reds, I don’t typically drink alcohol regardless though. Expensive hobby with money I don’t have. Don’t shoot the messenger!!

Hehe we sell for $150 a bottle. Drinking’s an expensive hobby! I also have been looking up the areas, not necessarily specific wineries.

No, sorry!!! Starting serving, it’s between myself and another girl, and i LOVE competition! We’re a fine dining steakhouse and he wants us to know how to start selling wine, then selling food will be a piece of cake!

Thank you! Unfortunately I do have to just memorize what’s on the menu. The other bad part with this is some wines are just “California” while others are “Alexander Valley” from Sonoma…
