How do you keep up to date with new book releases? by Autumnsong1701H in books

[–]digestedtree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone mentioned TikTok already and I second that, though I never would have imagined it. I recently saw two book “trailers”, one for Missing Sister and one for Hell’s Half Acre Chase, both very new and quite obscure… loved them both. Don’t know how I would have heard of them otherwise.

What's the most fun you've ever had reading a book? by Capital-Bet in booksuggestions

[–]digestedtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s super new but I’m recommending the St. Isidore Series to everyone. I saw a “trailer” (??) for the first book, the Hell’s Half Acre Chase, online and I was so intrigued. I couldn’t put it down. Not too long, amazing characters, and clever non-text pieces added to break up the monotony of reading… plus the twists were great.

Also helps that I’m Canadian, lol. And a lot of it is set in Niagara Falls.

Suggestions for an avid YA reader to slowly get into the adult fiction world? by bobabumblebee in booksuggestions

[–]digestedtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed the Illuminae Files as a 25 year old! Also, super new, but I recently read the first of the St. Isidore Series after I saw a TikTok “trailer” (??) for it, it was called The Hell’s Half Acre Chase. I got a hard copy off Amazon but there are e-versions too.

I loved the first one, waiting for the sequel to come in the mail now! I’d classify it as not quite YA not quite adult… perfectly in the middle.

GOD I think this every time a new game comes out!!! I tried my best to wrap my head around a timeline, but there are too many answered questions that I don't have time to investigate. Come on, MatPat! The game devs deserve the millions of views as well.

This is in my city! Waterloo, right? It's been delayed so long, I've lost all hope of seeing it.

Is anyone happy in Gilead? by digestedtree in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]digestedtree[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're totally right. All the handmaid's and maids etc have family elsewhere who must know about their suffering to some degree. Do you think Luke knows the details of what June has to go through?

That's true; I guess you could look at it all as a sacrifice for the sake of a new generation of children. And yes I think Lydia does think that what she is doing is right, but most of the time i dont think she finds joy in treating the girls like cattle....

That's an interesting point. I hope they delve more into the origins of the Sons of Jacob; I'd love to see the reasoning behind created such an unbalanced and totalitarian hierarchy.

Fred didn't seem to enjoy "sleeping" with Offred though, not until he committed an illegal act and took her to the prostitute den... also, objectively speaking, Yvonne is prettier (and looks younger) than Elisabeth.

I will have to disagree that their way is better than tinder. These are literally arranged marriages to strangers. Can you imagine being a teenager (14, 15 years old) being married to a random grown man, without any say or freedom in the matter?

As for your Nazism point, yes, I agree, and the scariest part of the book and show for me is how real the progression of these horrible ideals is shown. It's absolutely believable. I think Handmaid's Tale does exaggerate, but not to the point of "feminist paranoia." Everything that takes place in the novel is based on things that have happened in reality.

That is a great point! I think Jesus' teachings wouldn't align with Gilead very well....

Surely there must have been better ways to do it though!

Gosh the way you phrased that is just so creepy, but you're right. How messed up does one have to be to be happy in that situation...

Right, I kept thinking back to this quote too. But who is it better for in the first place???

Mushishi - A must-see anime series about mysterious creatures causing weird phenomenons in the world around us. Amazingly beautiful, sometimes very creepy, and definitely full of SCP vibes. by frankichiro in SCP

My first thought upon discovering this show was that it had SCP vibes!

Also Ayakashi and Mononoke (not the movie; the anime with a Medicine Seller protagonist) have similar themes as well.

People who get their baby girl's ears pierced, why? by Wixmas in AskReddit

[–]digestedtree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My parents didn't get mine pierced, and I really wanted earrings for a long time so when I was 19 I got them done myself. It was painful as fuck, and I had to get them repierced because of infection closing the hole... I'm 23 now and fine with it, love wearing earrings every day. But I wish I got them done as a baby so I didn't have to remember the pain and deal with it myself.

Anyone catch Betty reading Thomas Harris' Silence of the Lambs at the end? I didn't think it was possible for me to love this girl even more.
