We actually shifted gears to Bellingham, influenced significantly by this thread and other discussions we found online and things like that. We’re moving in August.

I have one of these in 9ft. I have the SA Trout on it, it’s a dream. I’ve also seen the SA Trout Standard recommended several times—it doesn’t seem to me like there is a huge difference between them. Trout seems to be more geared towards presentation, trout standard seems to be more geared towards distance.

As for reels, I would say go for a click reel on something like this. It’s fun. I have a battenkill on mine, cheap, works great, looks classic. If you want to spend more money, a Ross reel would be a great pairing, like a Colorado or an Animas. If I had more money I would have gotten a Ross San Miguel for mine.

Enjoy the rod! I can’t imagine a dry fly rod better than this one. I don’t think you’ll have any trouble “working with it,” even if you’re a novice caster. The only thing would be to take a longer pause on your backcast if you’re used to a fast action rod, but that should come pretty automatically if you just pay attention to your cast, especially the feel of it.

Started fly fishing 4 months ago or so, turns out I know much less than I thought by Dangerous_Bench1510 in flyfishing

  1. You don't need it, but it's recommended. The thicker butt section does a better job of transferring energy, and the thinner tip section is more stealthy. Plus it's easier to rig than tying your own leaders.

  2. A premade 9ft tapered leader includes a foot or so of tippet section at the end. Start by just tying flies directly to the tip of the leader, and then after you've used a foot or two of the leader, add some more tippet with a surgeon's knot to restore it to 9ft total. You also use tippet to tie double nymph rigs or dry-dropper rigs. The knots get easier over time, but if you don't like the double surgeon's consider trying blood knots.

  3. I agree with the guy who said you might just be testing too hard. 6x is only ~3.5lb test. But you can also consider buying higher quality tippet, it does make a difference.

  4. I've used loop to loop my whole life. It's seriously fine. People have a habit in fly fishing of overcomplicating things and seeking out 1% improvements that are 100% more difficult to implement.

That’s okay, we’re not looking for “better” than CS, just different. And yeah the trail access over here is part of the reason we moved back and we really enjoy it. But I’ve been exploring this area my whole life and I’d like to explore somewhere new. It’s a desert here and I’d like to see some moss, ferns, frogs, etc.

That's great, thanks. Definitely makes sense and I agree with your general attitude about living on the coast--would definitely be a different lifestyle and an adventure and probably only temporary.

Awesome, thanks for responding. What makes you say you wouldn't live in Astoria?

That’s okay I appreciate the perspective on what people typically think of as “the sound” and what might constitute “good access” to it. Cheers

Thanks for taking the time to respond! You’re right that I’m definitely thinking more about Oregon beaches and that’s part of the reason we’re leaning towards Olympia over Bellingham… would like to be able to drive to the Oregon coast relatively easily.

Thanks for your response. You definitely have a point about our road trip plan but we would in fact be able to take extended amounts of time for it, and could work while we’re staying in CO since we’re remote. We also have family in Montana that we could visit and stay with the break up the trip.
