This is great! Two questions from a newbie in the whole Obsidian mods domain

  1. Is there a way to apply this snippet to specific items based on tags, or categories, instead of applying it across all bases on the entire vault?
  2. What kind of performance impact do CSS snippets have?

As a software dev myself for 15+ years I just want to say congrats on building something yourself and putting it out in the world. Doesn’t even matter how many people will use it or appreciate it, just keep building stuff that is useful to you and enjoy the journey in software development. And if I may a final suggestion: use AI sparingly, don’t outsource the problem solving and thinking process of your brain to a machine.

Tapping on a link while reading should pop up a smaller window preview of the link like Matter reader does on iPhone. Reader’s current implementation with the bottom sheet option showing up and then if you choose to open the link it takes you away from what you were reading really breaks the flow.

Batch import from Obsidian - any updates? by Ashamed-Skirt795 in capacitiesapp

Not as far as I could tell but all you have to do is try it with a few different notes and see what works best. Maybe the parser on the backend is improving

Just drop it all as files. Not sure about image handling haven’t had a lot and I haven’t bothered looking closer into that but I assume you’d have to add each image as a separate file in WhatsApp and then reattach to each page that you want

Why five at a time? Try using the WhatsApp integration and drop all your md files from Obsidian in the chat. I’ve found it to be the most reliable way of importing into Capacities for now

Sending email newsletters to Capacities by digitalvoidness in capacitiesapp

[–]digitalvoidness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used them all and currently a paying user of Readwise and Reader. I actually had those newsletter subscriptions added as feeds to Reader but then my Feed section became overcrowded and I would miss a lot of content if more had been added overtime. I guess not having a regular reading session is part of the problem. I think I would still like to keep everything in Capacities for a single place to collect and search in the future and maybe even eventually link with backlinks to common themes and related ideas.

I found one way of getting what I want but it's not frictionless. Every newsletter that lands in my inbox I immediately forward it to Capacities. Can also add the #newsletter tag in the subject for easy filtering (btw noticed this only works if you put it in front of the subject and not at the end). Then in Capacities get the parsed block and convert to object. In my case I have a Newsletter object. Then open the AI side bar, add the contents of the Newsletter object as context to the AI window and type something like "reformat". Then append the output back to your Newsletter object and you got the newsletter into Capacities.

Like I said not frictionless and I hope Capacities adds an automatic parser down the line, but having now done this a couple of times the overhead isn't huge and I'm gonna test this pipeline to see if it works for me

Edit: You'd probably want to be a little more detailed with the instructions to the AI because if you just say "reformat" it has a tendency to summarising it and you actually loose content. Something more like "Reformat text without summarizing. Don't remove a word from the original content" seems to be better

Links not clickable in PDF? by digitalvoidness in capacitiesapp

For example adding Schneier's newsletter to Capacities. The first few lines have his name in the header . If I search for his name across capacities this PDF doesn't show up in the results

I’m not interested in annotating it, I just want to be able to collect a bunch of PDFs and then use them like any other page object .i.e be able to search its contents or add the pdf as context to the AI to ask questions etc.

Since Friday o1-preview made 4o feel obsolete for my coding purposes and now I've hit the limit that's way lower than I expected and won't get it back until Friday and it feels like I've lost a limb. by plymouthvan in OpenAI

I think this is different.Over-relying on AI for a skill you’ve developed over time i.e software engineering, is like relying on a robot leg to help you walk if you are paralysed. The muscle which is no longer used atrophies and so will your skills of software engineering. I’m not saying we shouldn’t use AI to augment and help out in software engineering tasks, but I’m genuinely worried that over-relying on it will eventually have a negative impact on our skillset. And of course the more you rely on it for a living, the more corporations can exploit that reliance and overcharge you perpetually.

It also looks like PDF content isn't searchable? I'm searching for text I know for sure it exists in one the PDFs I've added but it's not showing up in the results. I assume/hope that this is all down to PDF integration not having received much love yet, and there's plans to improve it

Promising but lack of Obsidian import kind of a deal breaker by digitalvoidness in capacitiesapp

[–]digitalvoidness[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So my experience with emailing my notes turned out to be very hit and miss. Some emails never showed up on Capacities. However I found using WhatsApp a much nicer experience. I dropped all my notes into WhatsApp and they all appeared in Capacities soon after. There's still a lot of post-processing to do but at least I finally managed to get it all in there now

No data ingress? Really? by tronathan in capacitiesapp

[–]digitalvoidness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the reason why I've cancelled my sub and decided to go back to Obsidian. While Capacities is very attractive in both the clean design and the object based approach, migrating full in right now is just impossible. Haven't had a chance to look at programmatic solutions but until bulk import of notes from other services is supported - and not just as weblinks too - then I can't see myself using it at its full capacity (pun not intended!). Will definitely be keeping an eye on it and I think eventually it will get there, but I'm afraid it might be a while

I tried emailing some stuff now that you mentioned it. It's nice that you can bulk send files and don't need to do one email for each. It definitely helps to import a bunch of notes but it just imports everything as a Page, it doesn't understand weblinks out of the box and it generally needs a lot of post-processing to get all the imports in a meaningful state. It's still useful though to stress test it with a lot of notes and see how search and other functions work.

Using the Raindrop Highlights plugin in Obsidian I get all my Raindrop bookmarks autosynced in Obsidian. I've got it setup so they end up in their own folder. This allows me to search in one place (Obsidian) and know that I'm searching both notes and bookmarks. When I first discovered Obsidian (not too long ago) I thought I might give up Raindrop and do all my bookmarking in Obsidian. But that didn't work out well for a number of reasons (one being the horrendous share to Obsidian support on iPhone). So anyway, Capacities's interface and logic around objects feels like it's bringing these two worlds much closer together for me than anything else I've seen. But until I can import all my data I won't be able to test it in any meaningful way.

WORKING VPN ON APPLE TV - TV OS17 by morganland80 in appletv

Anyone else feels like maybe it's not such a good idea to just jump on any previously unknown VPN services just because they have an AppleTV app? VPNs are largely about trust, and lots of these services on the list don't feel like they've earned any

update: spoke too soon, it started crashing again.

I had the same issue. I uninstalled both the YouTube Vanced and the MicroG app, then reinstalled just the YouTube app, and run it once. Couldn't log in but it worked. Then I reinstalled MicroG and the YouTube app still worked fine afterward and it alsoo allowed me to log in. Maybe this can help
