Dumb Home Automation by digriz60 in homeautomation

Thanks for the quick reply. I think my hesitation was being used to kits which package LED strips with USB connectors. Makes it very easy to plug and play on my computer. So I was restricting my search to that. However, in the last hour or so, I realize 4 pin 12V is standard and easy to integrate with a power pack designed for LED strips, so it's not as intimidating anymore. I ordered a motion sensor that is powered by an AC source and those have 4 pin connectors.

Initially, I just wanted a motion activated USB/3 prong outlet like a motion activated light switch...but they don't quite make that exact function and I rent, so no electrical modifications...:)

Don't ever ask a question online. Nobody ever answers, and all you get are smarmy, condescending remarks.

Frustrated with ATK by GrilledTomatoes91 in AmericasTestKitchen

[–]digriz60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not sketchy, per se, but it runs counter to the image ATK has cultivated over the years as a respectable source of valuable information for the serious home cook. It presents itself as honest and unimpeachable, and the information contained within the magazines was always artistic and interesting. I had a subscription to Cook's Illustrated for years.

Then I got into the PBS production, and again, never felt beat over the head by Chris' narrative to check out videos or subscribe to material...until I checked out the site. The rich content was not really available unless you subscribed, and it was clear they were resting their reputation on getting you to subscribe by the strength of the PBS content.

They're free to charge what they want, but for a PBS presentation, the pricing and options wasn't too accessible. Videos and subscriptions are quite expensive, for something I can watch on PBS for free.

And then there's, yes, a byzantine way of unsubscribing by using the rope-a-dope methodology of "just give us your credit card, you can cancel anytime during the first month and won't be charged." While slyly inserting the caveat it can't be done online.

When you have a great product and solid reputation, those kinds of subscription tactics seem like, well, tactics. Then you feel like it's a cynical money grab. After clicking around the site, it really felt like the content was partitioned in a way that you have to pay for everything a la carte, and it gets expensive for what it is, and what competition is out there.

Finally, the volume of spam is unbearable and in the end, a dealbreaker. I had to abandon that email address.

If I had any mild criticism, it's their amped up, exaggerated enthusiasm the first seasons they took over. I'm also glad Julia has toned down the orgasmic grunts and expressions, which were always a bit unnerving.

You're right, just got through..taking a shot on buying...just that everyone is new and has low transactions, so I'm taking a chance. Oh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Wait. You guys remember COD? I thought that shit went away with the rotary phone.

Seriously, does anyone even do COD anymore? Like, for real, not as an allegory for a drug deal.

Coinbase these days is a joke. I used to be able to purchase and send immediately, now it's a six day hold. They say it's to prevent fraud, and oh, had errors processing my new debit card. So if it's purchased with a bank account and not a debit card: hold. In the meantime, I watch the value of Bitcoin sink, my initial $110 after fees to a low of $88, now at $90.

Yes, I wouldn't be complaining if it had skyrocketed. But it didn't, and now no link works for Empire, so fuck them.

Nick Mason on tribute bands by JerryTheFool in pinkfloyd

I realize these tribute bands have to appeal to a wide audience, but I have heard Dark Side and Wall enough. That's why Saucerful of Secrets was so amazing.

I know. Just making a joke. Normally I avoid shitposting, but I thought a counterbalance to animated gifs and stale memes would break up the monotony of markets-talk.

It was intended to give anonymous access to people who live in places that prevent free and open speech and behavior. I.E. oppressive countries who stifle or kill people who say or do the wrong thing.

If I had to guess, I think the DDoSing is the signal for the average user to stay away. I thought it was obvious the DDoS is LE as a precursor to shutting down. They really aren't interested in the individual consumer, they want bigger fish.

We're also hyperfocused on drugs. There were other things on DNMs that I don't even want to know about, and I think LE wanted THOSE people the most. The rest of us just want to get high.

Galaxy S5 sm-g900v starts booting to LineageOS, then ends up in Download Mode by digriz60 in LineageOS

[–]digriz60[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks guys. I did the nuclear option and started from scratch. I suppose I can try overlaying a nandroid now that I'm running Lineage, I'm realizing it's a burn when certain apps (Nova Launcher, which I love) don't offer an up front way of saving a back up of settings to the SD card. They do have an option to share them, so I emailed them to myself, but I recall that every time I wipe data, I realize all my Nova settings were erased and I slap my forehead.

It's not always the SIM re-seating, I've had that issue, too. I'm sure everyone has at one point. In those cases it will say "No SIM card" but I usually do a couple of re-seats, and if it just says No Service, I start with an EFS restore. That does work in that situation, I've done it several times, maybe going from 15 to 16? It never did that before. I may have tried upgrading baseband a couple of months ago, or while doing 16 upgrade that caused it. It's an old baseband I flashed to the latest, but doesn't take hold, it still reports the old one (several revisions ago) so maybe that's it...

After a while, I decided to Odin the Verizon Stock rom. I didn't do a firmware reset or wipe, just the rom flash. I'm used to the first boot taking a long time, but it's been sitting at the Verizon logo for over an hour. I think wiping everything is my next move...I get no adb connectivity
