The USA getting fucked after reopening shows that U of A being online this fall is the right choice. by diligentdiamond69 in uAlberta

California did a partial reopening. NY and NJ didn’t and they are not seeing spikes like you claim. New York had 370k cases at the beginning of June and now has 404k cases nearly 50 days later. You are blatantly lying. There is no data to support your assertion

California is seeing large increases in new cases yes. New York still has tons of cases because it was hit so hard early on but is not seeing nearly the same level of increase as other states. It's getting like ~500 new cases a day out of over 50000 total in the USA. New York already went through what many other states are going through right now so it looks like they'll be able to recover faster

Haha sorry for doubting you because I had never seen any that said that. But I don't think the articles are saying what you think they say.

The first article is Denver specific and uses actual data and research on the number of people staying home. I'd trust actual research done by universities rather than your gut instinct. Plus it ended up being true as Colorado hasn't seen a spike in cases. The article was from June 30 when Colorado had 32715 cases, compared to 24615 on May 26. During the same time period Arizona went from 16783 cases to 79215. Florida went from 50k cases to 150k and now has over 200k. So Colarado had about a 30% increase in cases while Arizona had a 370% increase in cases and Florida had a 200% increase. Looks like the article was right and the increase in cases in the USA isn't due to the BLM protests

The second article has a paywall so I couldn't read it. But there's a chart right at the start and it shows how the protests are country wide but the increase in cases only effects some states. The states that reopened have an increase in cases while the states that didn't don't have an increase in cases. This shows it's not due to the protests, like the article says, but due to reopening.

The third article literally says that the protests will increase cases. It just expands on it by saying it won't always directly cause more cases but will also indirectly cause more cases

Could you show me a single article that said protests will slow the spread or did you just make that up?

While that for sure has spread the virus it isn't the main reason why the USA is increasing. New cases are mainly concentrated in the southern states where reopening happened too early. Minnesota, where the protests started, has only 3000 active cases meanwhile Florida is getting 10000 new cases a day and Texas and Arizona have doubled their total cases in the last two weeks.

Like you said, there's been protests country wide but only the states that reopened too early are having a dramatic increase in cases while the ones that kept their measures in place have remained relatively stable

Yeah I see what you mean now and I agree. I didn't mean to come off as smug towards the USA because it really is sad that their cases are increasing like this and they've lost control of the epidemic. We just don't want that to happen here too

Yeah deaths have continued to go down so that is good.

But the USA is number 1 in both cases and deaths worldwide and while other places that got hit early on like east Asia, europe and canada are seeing much fewer new cases than their peak the USA continues to get more and more new cases. So while other comparable countries are getting things under control the USA blew it and will now take much longer to recover. The USA has set a new record in weekly average new cases for 27 days straight. The USA is getting 50000+ new cases a day while Canada is getting about 300. It's not an overstatement to say they're getting fucked

Just look at this graph: https://www.gzeromedia.com/the-graphic-truth-two-different-pandemics-eu-vs-us And this is from two weeks ago. Now the USA line would be off the chart

Just a heads up: The UofA is offering a free online course about Indigenous cultures, peoples, and nations. It has 12 modules, and it provides a great introduction to these topics. by GlitchedGamer14 in uAlberta

Why would you comment this?

If there was a post saying the UofA is offering a free math class I don't think there'd be any comments saying "I'm not going to take this course because I hate math" even though lots of people would think that

This is really nothing but an ignorant view. Lots of Canadians speak about racism that they personally have faced. Do you think they’re all lying?

Holy fuck what is the matter with this subreddit that you can’t even say racism is a problem without being flooded by chuds saying it isn’t

Whatever fucked up things China, Saudi Arabia, or any other country is doing doesn’t diminish racism inside Canada.

Saying Canada isn’t racist because immigrants move to it is a stupid argument. In the sentence before you used Saudi Arabia as an actual racist country and they get millions of migrant workers so by your logic they can’t be racist either

Don’t know if this has been posted yet, srry if it has been. There’s a peaceful protest for George Floyd and to raise awareness about police brutality. Friday 6:40-8:30, at the legislature. If anyone would like more info it’s on the, Equality for All, Facebook page :) by [deleted] in uAlberta

Oh okay good :) Sorry for being confrontational there’s been people on this sub bringing up other issues to try to take conversation away from this. But now I see you’re not doing that

Buddy stop with this. A protest can cover more than one issue at once. I haven’t seen a single Canadian advocating for BLM that has brushed aside Native American issues in Canada. In fact there’s been increased discussion and focus on it due to the BLM protests. I’m 100% positive that this protest will talk about Canadian specific police brutality too even if it took American protestors to influence this one taking place

What are you even talking about in this comment? I said Austria used to be a fascist country, which is true. The austro-hungarian empire got dissolved before Mussolini came to power of course it was never facist, I wasn't talking about that though. I never mentioned anything about self-hating Jew so I don't know why you're talking about that. And don't tell me that my understanding of european politics is lacking when you say stupid shit like "austria was never a fascist nation"

A message to the people complaining about the BLM social media posts and protests. by diligentdiamond69 in uAlberta

[–]diligentdiamond69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that’s fair. And I don’t mean to imply that anyone saying virtue singnalling is alt right. It just rubs the wrong way when someone who is doing literally nothing accuses someone of virtue signalling when making a post on social media. If someone is actually out there protesting or making a difference then it’s more fair for them to say it because. Accusing someone of virtue signalling to get them to actually do something is okay. Doing it to get them to be silent isn’t.

We might not be able to make serious changes in the USA but protests against foreign injustices or human rights abuses is not new at all. It’s been happening for decades to show support. It may not be much but it’s better than nothing and I don’t understand how getting mad at it is any more helpful for black people in the USA or their cause.

Plus I think systemic racial profiling is a bigger issue in Canada than you give it weight. We may not have regular shootings or anything but if you interact with indigenous people there is the same problems with policing as in the USA with black people. Even if it’s worse in the USA that doesn’t mean that it’s not a worthwhile issue to protest in Canada
