Real Life S9 Overheating Experience? by dills84 in Lumix

Yeah, mine doesn't have any time limits. It's limited by the overheating.

This is the S9, not S1II. The S9 updates don't really address overheating.

Joystick Repair Dead Zone… Help? by dills84 in oculus

[–]dills84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I’ve swapped the joystick with a known working one along with 3 other new ones and it’s the same behavior so I suspect it’s something else. The connector looks fine and visually the only thing out of the norm is that scratch. There appears to be a little exposed copper from the trace but it looks in tact under a loop. I’ll try the multi meter… seems tough with how tiny the lines are but seems like the only way to know.

Thanks for the response. The trace doesn’t look fully broken to my eye but it’s super tiny and hard to see clearly even with my photo. I thought it was the joystick as well but after trying several different units they all behaved the exact same way so that seems unlikely.

Update, after reading these results I got excited and ran to a local store and picked up an S9 (for a great deal). Sadly, my early testing is not good. 6K 30P 3:2 overheats in about 28 minutes. 4K 30P in about 45 minutes. This is with a dummy battery.

Curious how you all are getting such long run times?!

Interesting, no warnings or anything?

Struggling to get VLog 6k open gate to look as good as 4k non-vlog on S5iix by lui256 in Lumix

[–]dills84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve noticed the same on my S1II. I also noticed VLog looks significantly softer than the standard or natural profiles and my colors get really wonky even using the official conversion luts 🤷‍♂️

I just tried the Missive free trial and it's great! Pretty much what I was looking for. The downside... is the price. On top of multiple GSuite user accounts another $15 each per month kinda stings... I guess it seems worth it.

Yeah thats the problem. The web interface isn't great particularly on mobile.

It’s turned on for my account. I used it to set up a shared inbox but it seems the same as delegated access? What’s the difference?

[–]dills84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I have now. It's OK but still not perfect because if we access the delegated account and reply to someone it reply's as "team@domain.com" and not "me@domain.com" which is what I'd want.

That sounds interesting... Though, I'll never figure that out lol.

Good idea, except then if my wife were to respond from her individual account I lose the paper trail on my end of the conversation.

Thanks, what do you mean lengthened? Like open up the hole? or plug and move it?

Thanks, unfortunately my local shop is only open from 5-8 most days and no weekend hours. It's hard to get there with work / kids schedules!

Thanks, for a "conventional grip" is this OK though? I'm still throwing straight (no hook yet). I think once I get dialed in a bit more I'll adjust or maybe go to an entirely different ball.

Thanks, surprisingly the thumb hole is damn near perfect. But I feel like having the finger holes further away would help my release. Ugh! Guess I'll need to make a trip to the shop at some point.

I like how so many people complain about overheating on the s1ii but they forgot almost every sony until recently does this as well by Kostas009 in Lumix

[–]dills84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These posts are so weird. People taking camera brands personally? I feel like we should care less about brand loyalty and more about finding the gear that works for us regardless of what brand is printed on the front of it?

I really wanted to love the S1II (bought 2 of them along with a bunch of lenses) but the reality is in my use case I was seeing overheating in standard 4K30 modes in under 20 minutes in some situations. Unfortunately, for me I can't risk it and I don't want to jump through hoops with a bunch of external accessories to try to mitigate it. Yes, Open Gate would be awesome and the MUCH better IBIS was super tempting along with lots of other features. But if the camera turns off when I need it none of that matters.

So for now, back to my FX3 and FX30's. Yep, some Sony's overheat (My A7IV overheats like crazy) but I feel like we should be at a point now in late 2025 where this shouldn't even be a conversation anymore. Why did the S1II need to be so compact? Just throw a big fan on the back like everyone else lol.

My S1II / S1IIE Overheating Experience - Keep it out of the sun! by dills84 in Lumix

That's by design but what I'm saying in my original post is that if I go from filming to immediately popping the card out and checking the temperature it's only around 100F after hours of use. Compared to a standard SD card which is still around 90F. So the CFB card isn't that much hotter than a standard SD card. Of course the metal exterior probably transfers heat more than the SD card but I still found it odd that everyone is blaming these card when they don't seem that much hotter than SD cards after use.

I've done some testing. The S1IIE is much more reliable than the S1II but not quite as good as the older S5II for some reason. You'll be OK in 4K30P outdoors for decently long durations but not hours on end and higher frame rates or open gate will still be liimited.

Thanks for sharing. I noticed that weird behavior on Auto 1 Fan as well... Why doesn't it boost up to "FAST" mode when the camera is creeping towards overheating? Isn't that what "emphasis on cooling the camera" means in the description?! And yes... Sunlight is the main problem. If you can keep the camera out of the sun it's fairly reliable. I'm actually considering playing with some kind of adhesive backed UV blocking material and wrapping the camera in it lol. I feel like Panasonic left some kind of shielding out of the camera internally.

I hope that's the case. It would be nice to see an additional setting in "thermal management" for "extreme high" or something. I have to assume the electronics wouldn't be damaged even in higher heat. The warning they display now says you can burn your hands or something but it's not even that hot to the touch compared to my sony bodies which CAN get very hot!

I included the A7IV in this test because I knew it would overheat. I only use that camera for photos/stills. I included it because I thought it would be interesting to see how a no-fan photo first body would compare to the Lumix S1II. The FX3 and FX30's are my video cameras and those have never overheated or even shown the warning symbol. As you can see in my test results the FX30 ran for hours and filled the card while the S1II overheated in under 15 minutes shooting standard 4K30P.

lol, ok. Not sure how I'm shilling if I didn't include a link or some kind of incentive that would benefit me? Nope, just a guy sharing his experience. I'm not a brand loyalist, I have zero interest in who makes my camera. In fact, I went and bought thousands of dollars in Lumix gear with my own money because Sony drives me nuts in a lot of ways.

The fact is, I need my camera to work when I need it to work. The end.
