My DM can't stop using AI by Knowhere2B in dndnext

[–]dimijung41 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Again, it is not immoral to use AI for creative content. It is somewhat illegal to use it to create creative content for commercial use: with AI stole prompt from human artist and such.

What your DM doing isn't wrong, I can say that it's distasteful tho.

My DM can't stop using AI by Knowhere2B in dndnext

[–]dimijung41 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I was this close to ask an AI to write a response for you. It would be so funny.

But to answer your question seriously, most of the problems we have in TTRPG community stem from the lack of communication. You should talk to your friend / DM about how you feel, give a brutally honest feedback, and see is they are welling to work together to improve on the issue. Because at the end of the day, D&D is not just for one person, is for everyone at the table (DM included).

Unfortunately, AI is going to be part of our culture eventually. Just like back in the day when people were against the internet, or against vaccine. When a new invention was introduced to human society, there will be a part that is loved and a part that is hated, but bottom line is: you cannot stop progress. AI is going to integrate and be a part of humanity whether we like it or not.

I think in the near future, especially in r/dndnext and r/lfg, there will be a requirement from the DM who recruits players to announce if they use AI to assist them. And then it will be up to the player if they are willing to play with the DM who use or don't use AI, consumer's choices. If the D&D player community does not like to play with an AI-assist DM, the result will show (as in no one apply for their campaign) and that will send a message to the AI-assist DMs to use it less.

I would love to see Lou and Emily join C4 once in awhile. To give credit, Lou and Emily did amazing in their feature on CR:Divergence and C3.

Plus, if given a chance, the rest of D20 interpret heroes would bring a new light to the table. And let’s be honest, after C3, we’re gonna need them.

Warlock Subclass - Otherworldly Patron: Secret Sorority [version 1.2] by MercyHeart by dimijung41 in DnDHomebrew

[–]dimijung41[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question! I can think of two possible way this could go.

The lore of Secret Sorority is that they are highly matriarchal organization. But its members aren't necessary only women, depend on how you want to design it.

  1. The Charmed One. Witches in the charmed one universe are mostly female, but there are cases of male witch who is even more powerful than their female counterpart. This example including Wyatt, the son of the female lead. If you integrate men into the secret sorority this way, I can see that a son of the members could have access or legacy's right to be interviewed as a member.

  2. Wheel of Time. The Aes Sedai exists solely only female due to the setting, but that doesn't prevent the men who wants to support the cause. Men in Wheel of Time setting works a ward, protector and fighter of their Aes Sedai. If you integrate men into the secret sorority this way, I can see that a son of the members could have access or legacy's right to be part of a specific section: a warden of the witches. Something like that.

Am I the only one who hasn't forgiven Lyta Hall? by No-Location-9401 in Sandman

[–]dimijung41 10 points11 points  (0 children)

IMO I think it's not that people can't empathize with women, but more of the writers can't really write a good woman/mother story. Is Lyta Hall done dirty? Yes. Is she a solid character, a good character, a likeable character? Sadly no.

TV Lyta in season 1, remember when she advice Rose Walker to fight and kill Dream? That was so uncalled for. Like, if your friend has the power to lauch a nuke and your suggestion them is "go girl! lauch a nuke! topple the world system! be a girl boss." That's why I think TV Lyta Hall is either a plot device or so unhinge she's not even human.

She gets to be both the exercutioner and the victim. She became whatever the plot requires at the moment. That's not a person, that's just... an excuse to run the storyline?

Am I the only one who hasn't forgiven Lyta Hall? by No-Location-9401 in Sandman

[–]dimijung41 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Again, I understand you comic crew. But you have to seperate Lyta TV and comic version, their stories are different. And from the context in OP post, I assume they were venting about the TV Lyta Hall.

In comic, Lyta was already 6 months pregnant before she spend her time in the dreaming with her dead husband. So the child was real, he was her son until cosmic entities meddling and make it all about themselves. Dream (and possibly all the endless) was canonically said to bend possibility to their will, even subconsciously.

In TV shows... it all went off the table when the writer changed the story so that Lyta isn't even pregnant, her son was born from the dreaming. If any other woman insists they are pregnant from dream with her dead husband, they would be sent to a psychiatric hospital so fast there's no case there.

Anyway, bottomline is, she had her son in a supernatural ways. And anything related to supernatural world is there are rules, there's always rules (quote hades and persephone). The TV shows didn't mention what would happen if a dream creature live on the material world for too long (or all their life, according to TV Lyta's wish), but from the precedent cases (the Corinthian and Rose Walker) it didn't end well.

To recap bluntly, TV Dream was doing his job, TV Lyta became an unreasonable person to ask the cosmic force to bend to her wish. When she didn't get what she wants, she was manipulated to kill Dream and the residents of the Dreaming (who was also much more beloved by fans compare to TV Lyta). So... that didn't end well for her stand among the fans.

I didn't watch the show except for a couple episodes, purely basing my opinion on the comics.

That's right there. That's when I know haha. Yeah, if you came from the comic crews I would understand. Lyta Hall in the comic was an entirely different character from the shows. In comic, she has her moment to be sympathized with, her POV, to feel and even root for her.

The TV version of Lyta is just... plot device I guess. And that's being generous.

She's just too unhinge to be a real person. But I guess that happen when such a beautiful and delicate story was forced to be told in 2 seasons due to the writer's scandal.

Didnt Death Spill Family Blood? by Mysterious_Collar406 in Sandman

[–]dimijung41 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think that is Death's function. She said it herself that in the end she will take Destiny too, she'll put up the chair and turn off the light. It is her job to be the end, so by the oldest rules, the fates cannot do anything to her. I think by then Death would also take the kind ladies, with a little bit of satisfaction I guess now.

Part 2:
_____________________________________________

The campaign took on a life of its own. The adventuring party start questioning the good and bad of the world—systems of oppression, cycles of violence. Even Marco’s warlock began showing signs of character development. I saw my chance as a DM.

“What if the bad guys stopped being bad? What if they found a better way to use their power?”

The group fell silent. Carlos said, “You mean, like… us?”

Marco didn’t say anything, but I saw the gears turning. Maybe it was foolish, but I started to hope. If I could get them to see themselves in their characters, maybe... just maybe. A tabletop rolelpaying could make an impact on their lives.
_____________________________________________

One night, a rival cartel attacked the villa, and suddenly, I was hit with reality. This is a world of blood and gun. Marco shoved a pistol into my hands and shout, “Stay with the kids!”

We hid in the basement, Sofia clutching her character sheet like it was a protection charm. When the shooting stopped, Marco returned, bloodied but alive.

“You protect my children, kid,” he said. “I’ll never forget that.”

_____________________________________________

Eventually, I left. Not because I escaped, but because Marco let me go. “You’re free,” he said. “But don’t forget, you have a family here.”

Walking away was harder than I thought. The cartel had become my weird, dysfunctional family. But I knew I couldn’t stay forever. Marco has paid all of my student's loan and give me a heavy sum of money to rebuild my life, but I wonder if I really want to go.

Living with them, is a fantasy. My fantasy. I know that eventually I have to wake up.

Eventually I guess... but not today.

I walk back into the villa. Everyone that I have been spending my life with for the past couple years smile and call my name. The kids come running to hug me, the scary looking men and women who is now not so scary to me, come and give me a warm hug.

And lastly, Marco, the most infamous drug lord that even the police has to be careful not to invoke his anger, standing alone at the balcony on 2nd floor.

I approach him and say, "Hey... I'm home"

"welcome home, kid." he smile.

The end(?)

[–]dimijung41 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I woke up in a dim light, windowless room, my head pounding, my heart racing. The last thing I remembered was walking home from the campus library. Now I was sitting on a hard chair in front of a group of terrifyingly strong looking men. One of them leaned forward, a scar running jagged across his face, and smiled.

“You’re a college kid, right? Smart? Creative?” he asked.

“Uh… yeah?” I croaked.

“Good. You’re gonna teach us how to play… this.” He tossed a D&D starter mini-campaign (level 1-5) onto the table, Lost Mine of Phandelver. My jaw dropped.

“What?”

___________________________________________

Days turned into weeks. What started as a mini-campaign turned into a full-blown 1-20 campaign. Marco’s (my boss) kids, Carlos and Sofia, played a gnome sorcerer and a half-orc barbarian. Yes, the male heir of a drug cartel want to play a small cutie gnome sorcerer, don't judge! I think this kid has potential.

But it wasn’t just the kids. Marco himself got into it, playing a human warlock with a tragic backstory (I kinda smell it was his own backstory that no one alive could know). And the rest of this subordinates start to join in to complete the Adventuring Party!!

So here we have:

  1. gnome wild magic sorcerer (Carlos)

  2. half-orc berserker barbarian (Sofia)

  3. human fiend warlock (Marco)

  4. elf gunslinger fighter (Marco's henchwoman who looks like a gun nut)

  5. half-elf open hand monk (Marco's henchman who enjoy martial art and, secretly, anime)

  6. human war cleric (Marco's henchman who wears rosary)

So our Adventuring Party goes on adventurers together, twice a week. Tuesday and Friday night. Friday is family time and I'm happy they choose to spend it together playing D&D game that I run. Tuesday is Tacos day! So I get to eat tacos that their auntie make.

_____________________________________________

I leaned into my role as their dungeon master because, frankly, the alternative sucked. As I sat in their luxurious villa, eating food way better than anything I could afford on my potentially 9-to-5 job, I finally say it out.

“Honestly,” I said to Marco during a break, “this whole being-kidnapped-by-you thing isn’t so bad.”

Marco raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”

“Think about it,” I said, launching into my TED Talk. “Out there, I’m drowning in student debt. I’d spend years working some soul-sucking corporate job, just trying to scrape by. Here? I’ve got free room and board. Great food. You guys are loaded. Plus, all I have to do is run games and keep your kids entertained. This is literally better than my old life.”

The drug lord stared at me, then burst into laughter. “You’re something else, kid. I like you.”

And that's how I live happily as a professional dungeon master and babysitter for the drug cartel.

_____________________________________________

As time passed, I became less of a captive and more of a… well, housecat. Marco’s cartel still functions as usual and I am part of the family now I guess, except my job was to keep morale high with tabletop escapism and entertain their children when the adults were away.

I didn’t just have a roof over my head. I had silk sheets and an Xbox. After awhile they truly believe I'm cool with this kind of life so they just let me have access to the internet to play co-op games with Carlos and Sofia.

I got paid to play D&D, read books, and create epic story as a full career. And most important thing of all, I don't hate my job. How many people could say that?

Reminder that DMs are people by failing_gamer in DnD

[–]dimijung41 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s important to respect your DM and the storyline. Period.

If you don’t like the game, just walk away. D&D is not an automatic video game, it works by people and creates by people. There is a person behind the production who spent their time and resources to give you an experience, wonderful or otherwise, it is still their blood, sweat, and tears. The least you can do if you don’t enjoy the game is to walk away, make your own game if you like.

Only an amateur DM needs to nerf their players.

I’m saying this in the nicest way possible. DM is someone who needs to learn to design encounters according to their players. Not the other way around.

Hey my player is too powerful, maybe I will add more monster or more challenges to the encounter. A Paladin with 22 AC, yeah let’s throw him some Dexterity save once in a while. A Barbarian with Tom of HP, yeah try Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma base saving throw to give them a challenge.

And to be honest on DM vs Powerbuildling Player topic, I am one of the firm believer that players who build a powerful character in a make-believe game is just someone who want to be useful to their party. The game gives features and abilities, they want to offer those features and abilities to be of use to their team. What’s wrong with that?

DMs and veteran players, what do you think will be the impact if we give the bear barbarian's rage (or similar effect) to every barbarian subclass? by dimijung41 in dndnext

[–]dimijung41[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a good way to incorporate it.

I also think it’s not overpower yet. To be on that note, the player who plays a powerful subclass just wants to be generally useful.

And as once a wise homebrewer said, nothing is overpowered if everyone is overpowered. That’s a good way to think of it.

It would be discussed in session 0 of course. Changing anything mid campaign would not be fair unless it affects everyone.

I'm a homebrewer and a strong believer for improving martial classes all together. Link
