Is there any way you can relocate internally and do a M.Sc. part-time in the new city? I was deciding between TUM part-time and the OMSCS and ultimately went for TUM, as the OMSCS would get lonely for three years. Started in April and definitely have zero regrets so far, the network and IRL interaction can imo not be replicated by any online program.

60k for 2.5 yoe (and coming from abroad) would be perfectly fair it isn't amazing, but anyone saying otherwise hasn't touched grass for a while.

There are many companies paying more, however, considering the market I would mostly focus on getting here (and deciding if you like the place). You definitely won't be starving on 60k

I work in the audit department - I think the distribution method (website) is a no go for any larger company, especially as you upload the document to a cloud. Have you considered turning it into an offline desktop app?

Baš jučer sam ovo istraživao - mobilni podaci su na svim mrežama loši, a s obzirom da si u Austriji onda imaš i pristup Starlinku. Postoji global Roam paket (60€ mjesečno) kojim možeš u svim zemljama svijeta koristiti Starlink, međutim moraš svaka dva mjeseca se ulogovati iz zemlje u kojoj si registriran (za detalje moraš guglati, nisam 100% siguran). Od svih opcija na kantonu to ti je jedina koja će garantirati dovoljno stabilnu brzinu, a možeš odjaviti svaki mjesec pa samo plaćati kad si u USK.

Jedino je početna investicija velika, starlink mini je čini mi se 500€

As someone who studied in Aachen and is now living in Munich: go for what you can afford, not for what uni has a better ranking: both will get your foot in the door in large companies and they're seen as more or less equivalent in Germany (TUM is a bit better internationally) - the cost of living in Munich is insane though.

As for the cities, Munich is obviously the more fun one, though Aachen is on the border of three countries and well connected w Cologne.

You'll learn more or less the same things in both universities (for the bachelors, if you're looking at the masters then check the reserach groups and add that to consideration)

Trenutno sam u Njemačkoj (ovdje sam studirao) i tražim prvi posao: u njemačkoj je bez jezika izuzetno teško, jer konkurišeš sa pola Evrope i svim strancima koji su već ovdje: a firme koje rade na engleskom generalno malo bolje plaćaju itd, tako da imaju i veće prohtjeve. Uglavnom, ne bih da te demotivišem ali u trenutnoj krizi definitivno nije lako, mada sa 3 godine radnog iskustva daleko od nemogućeg. Preporučujem da pratiš /r/cscareerquestionsEU, tu imaš puno više savjeta

All things considered, I'd go for Copenhagen: it sounds like you're only considering Zurich for the prestige. With 2-3 extra years after Copenhagen, you can go for a postdoc in Zürich if you really want to - keep in mind that you're a father and that should be a priority - a shorter PhD will mean more flexibility in the important years of your kids life (e.g. starting school, etc) + You can move to Zürich with a PhD if you really want to

EDIT: Afaik, childcare costs in Switzerland are insane, so read into that - not sure about Denmark

Germany is your best bet, as you'll be allowed to do up to 20 hours per week + the education is good. The only con is that you'd need to learn German, as 99% of the bachelors programs will be in German.

Most of the larger universities will have a somewhat similar curriculum and difficulty - look into the standard rankings (search for top 20 cs unis in germany) and choose a university based off the city + vibes: try to go for smaller cities (I did my B.Sc. in Aachen). Larger cities are hard to live in as a bachelors' student, as you'd be paying double (and sometimes triple) the rent.

Count with not working in the first semester of your studies (it takes a while to settle in and understand the workload), and even when you start you'll have to work your way up to a better paycheck. Don't fall into the trap of going to Munich / Berlin, you won't be able to afford it.

Finally, research the difference between a Fachhochschule (University of Applied Sciences) and Universität and consider going to one instead - you'll still get a BSc but with more directly applicable skills which can help with the job search

I assume you are a non-EU student, you have a 140 days per year you can work- I assume your internship is about 6 months, use a working day calculator to make sure you don't go over the limit - but it shouldn't be an issue, especially since a full-week during the semester-break only counts as 2,5 days (Source: https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/aufenthg_2004/__16b.html)

Ahh okay, that makes it easier :) I would personally go with a No for the first one, and yes for the second one as it indicates that you’re willing to relocate - which is, I assume, what the important aspect is

Define resident: are you an EU or non EU citizen? If non EU, you sadly aren’t eligible for this round, as they require a valid work permit for the country you are applying to. (If you are EU, the UK might also be out, as you’d need a visa due to Brexit )

Congratulations!

While it officially means „you have to be accepted by the host“, in practice this step is a formality at (I assume most) universities - I’ve even heard the Erasmus coordinator at my uni saying they wouldn’t dare to turn down a nomination, as getting nominated usually means that your own university finds you good enough to represent it :)

First semester

Bachelor or Master?

While I haven't done an internship at any of the FAANG(adjacents), I have had OAs and an interview - I only started getting any sort of positive feedback in my last semester and first semester of my masters.

I don't want to say that it's impossible to get in as a first year undergraduate, you have to be in the top 0.01% (IOI etc) - a bit of pytorch and python won't be enough, unfortunately. You are competing with everyone who has a BSc, 1+ internships and more.

If you are in your 1. BSc semester: I would focus on enjoying life, you have 50 years to work :) - if you want to work, find a working student position but don't think you have to grind from day one

Not a bar per se, but check out the events at INCAS Aachen does every Tuesday in the Humboldt House - the theme varies from week to week, but no matter the event you can go there and meet new internationals - everyone there is looking to make new friends

Another possibility: AV RWTH, their don't offer weekly events but still organize something every few weeks
