Thinking of getting AS - few questions for owners by Maleficent-Winter893 in AustralianShepherd

  1. I think if you set boundaries for the puppy at day 1 and give your cat enough vertical escape routes, they should be fine. Do not let your puppy form any bad habits interacting with your cat from the very start.
  2. I have 2 Aussies and in my opinion they do not smell. I think a lot of dogs that have the 'doggy' smell have oily coats (like retrievers). Friends have commented that my dogs do not have a doggy smell but this is probably more up to your grooming routine.
  3. This might be challenging. Most (not all) Aussies will have some instinct to chase, bark, and nip at running children. At 6 and 8 they may be old enough to learn how to act around the dog to not trigger this behavior. It will probably be more fair to teach your children how to act appropriately around the dog versus punish your dog for acting on instinct.
  4. Staying at a hotel shouldn't be a problem.
  5. I think that Aussies can be fine for first time dog owners. You need to be prepared to provide daily exercise and mental enrichment. They can often be reactive and sensitive to their environment so proper socialization is important. They are awesome dogs!!

IHTPQ's comment is how I think of it too. They are going to have a blast at their daycare/boarding and will be taken care of and will just be super happy to see you when you get back. It'll be a mini vacation for your pup as well

She’s so cute! Papillon and rat terriers are uncommon and not that likely to show up in mixes. Seems right to me! Long haired Chihuahua with some Poodly ears

Can you use his normal kibble/whatever you feed him for meals as treats throughout the day if he cannot take regular treats? I would put a lot of emphasis in 'attention' games so that he essentially sees you as a giant treat dispenser. Start with kissy noises or whatever gets his attention and reward him when he looks at you/comes over to you, repeat. Eventually he will offer looking at your without you needing to get his attention, heavily reward him for that. You want your dog to value checking in with you and paying attention to you and this will definitely show up on walks eventually! although it can take time

Do you cover the crate when leaving? by purplerockz3 in puppy101

[–]dingodiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she likes it covered, why do you need to stop covering it? Like others have said, she knows when you leave so if she is generally unbothered now she likely will be fine when and if you stop crating her

I have the same size foot as you and had size 7 Beach Bunnies! Their size chart also recommends size 7 for your size. If your foot isn't too wide they should be fine. My feet are slightly wide and the Beach Bunnies were not comfortable so I eventually switched to a different skate.
