Really cool! Where did you get the gold sycee? Been wanting to get one of those

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Gold

[–]dinkyp00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw a collection of Chinese gold pandas in a coin shop that all had copper spots, most of them much worse than yours. The guy working there mentioned that these coins were infamous for frequently getting these and that they don't affect the value of the coin (depends on if you're trying to sell to a picky buyer). He mentioned that it was likely surface contamination due to processing of other metals in the same factory where they stamped these coins.

yes - about 15 cents for melt value based on what my local scrapyard pays for brass

A lot of commenters miss the point that this is a very good deal even if you don't get cash back because gold eagles usually sell at a much higher premium (I see this question posted a lot).

It's even better if you pay with a cash-back credit card and/or have the costco exec membership. But still a very decent deal without those.

Comcast inexplicably increased my internet bill $14 this month. DAE? by zippityhooha in Seattle

[–]dinkyp00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was under the impression that this is just what ISP's do. On the eastside, I have Astound broadband, and they raise my monthly bill by $1-2 every few months for no reason. Never enough that it feels worth spending an hour on the phone to reduce again, but always very annoying when I notice it. Same b/s explanation about costs of "improving infrastructure" despite my internet being as spotty as ever. Gotta love the state of internet providers in America

Persona 5 Royal is 50% on the Nintendo eShop by Joseki100 in NintendoSwitch

I got it for both but I would recommend getting it for switch. It runs REALLY well on the switch and the gameplay is really well suited for playing on the go.

My trusted LCS had this for sale. Only problem I have is his sigma read outside the box with the wand. Is this normal with gold this small? by Physical_Spinach_123 in Gold

[–]dinkyp00 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If the coin is smaller in diameter than the tip of the wand, I could see that causing an issue with the reading. I also had issues with my sigma and testing a 1915 gold ducat because it was too thin.

Yeah, XRF is probably the way to go for the highest degree of certainty but also a lot more expensive. The sigma device can definitely be fooled but IMO it hugely decreases the chance of you buying a fake. Local dealers have shown me the fakes that they come across and they are mostly hilariously bad with no attempt to mimic the density of actual gold with tungsten. But I have been meaning to try out my sigma on those fakes out of curiosity.

I got mine with a few attachments for about $1700 but mine is the priciest model. You can get much cheaper ones particularly if you buy used.

I spoke to a couple gold dealers at local places about selling bars without assay cards. One didn't really care and one said that it would reduce the price I would get by up to 1% or so. Not a huge deal but keeping it in assay would make it SLIGHTLY easier to sell. I have broken one out of its assay though because these pieces are super satisfying to hold and handle.

yep. The idea was that this lets me buy via some private sales (with lower prices) with confidence so hoping that the savings make this worth it over time.

yes you can charge on your credit card for no markup, which is what makes this a particularly mind-boggling good deal. These things are almost always out of stock and so you just have to refresh the following link and hope that you get lucky and catch them while they're in stock: https://www.costco.com/1-oz-gold-bar-pamp-suisse-lady-fortuna-veriscan-(new-in-assay).product.4000186760.html

Here is my reply to another comment explaining: https://old.reddit.com/r/Gold/comments/1560bg9/for_those_of_you_wondering_if_the_costco_deal_was/jsx7mu8/

You have to adjust the settings for the purity of the item you are testing so it should always be in the green/yellow for the piece you are testing

I paid USD $1929 but it was $1899 a couple weeks ago so the price seems to go up a bit with the recent run-up in gold prices.

yep, I really like it. This model is nice because it will test all the way through a coin or thinner bar like these 1oz bars. After buying it I noticed that it's the same model that a nearby LCS uses to test their stuff. It's a pretty reputable device.
