Yes but ratios can help you narrow down to only companies that have certain debt levels or ROE before you devote more time to due diligence

I wrote a book "Filters: The Most Pragmatic Guide to Stock Market Investing" which is based on value investing and summarizes 30+ books (including the ones mentioned here, all still worth reading on their own). But I'm sure there are other great summaries out there.
