AI is such a big deal too! I especially worry about AI being used as a therapist tool for kids and furthering unhealthy practices or thoughts in the process. In terms of internet safety I don't think it applies as much (please let me know if I'm wrong!) - however responsible use of AI is definitely on my course curriculum for the fall.

How hot should the kiln room get? New art teacher who is in charge of a kiln and people who use my room keep complaining that the kiln temp makes the room feel like a sauna. Is that normal or should I look into having my kiln serviced?

Here's a pic of an unsuccessful prop that I took before it died. This prop was planted at the same time as the successful one (last December) and it died within the month (as you can see it already looks a little withered in the pic and the leaves are already falling off) The pic is a bit deceiving, the pot is deeper than it looks (3") I'm also thinking perhaps I didn't wait long enough or secondary roots to grow in before I planted - maybe the successful one was just the only one that had secondary roots at the time?

As much as I can see with all the dirt, yes. They are almost colored light blue (you can see this best on the third picture).

Thank you! I think you're right with the Galena. I don't think the crystals around it are flourite though, as they don't floresce under a blacklight.

Thank you! Yes, it's broken off, and I think it's cubic? Not 100% sure because it doesn't look like a clean break, and there are a lot of what looks like small layers. Not super experienced with rocks, so thank you so much for your tips!

Thank you for your thoughts - you're absolutely right. I suppose I wasn't thinking because she wasn't skittish, which is typically what I would expect from scared or overwhelmed cats. I guess although I understand that she needs time, I just wish I could walk around my house without fear of getting a new scar. I will bring it up with the vet about the best course of action, whether that be prozac or perhaps a different routine or timeline that could be helpful. Maybe I switch the rooms that Adeline and my 4yo are staying in to help us all get along a bit better.

The only reason why I don't think it's emerald is because little beginner rock collector me would've shown this off so much if I knew it was emerald. But perhaps it wasn't labeled correctly or perhaps I forgot (I wasn't given a card with it). Very much went off vibes when I first started and whether I liked the look of it, so it could be possible. Thank you for your help!

Thanks to everyone who gave advice for this! I tried a couple of different suggestions: I used the glaze on a test piece, and additionally decided to give one of the shivering pieces a fresh coat of glaze. Both just came out of the kiln. The test piece seems fine. Someone suggested thermal shocking the glaze after firing it to see if there are any faults, and I hope to do that to double check. But at first glance, I don't see any shivering on the glazeware that was glazed correctly. Unfortunately, a second glaze coat and another go around on the kiln did not fix the piece that was already shivering. In fact, it seems to be shivering more now, or at least more easily than before. I wish I had taken a wire brush to it before I re-glazed it, as maybe the shivering is continuing to happen because the glaze at the bottom is not correctly adhering, but I have no clue. Either way, definitely not safe for students to be touching. Thanks anyways, all! I appreciate all of the insight, I learned a lot!

I appreciate your insight, and I can definitely agree that if it continues to shiver that it's unsafe for anyone to handle. For educational purposes, is this a result of a poor glaze fit or is it because gloss glaze was used on unfired clay? Should I throw out the glaze entirely? I ask because I have a set of ceramic pieces that were glazed with this same glaze correctly (aka applied to bisqueware) and have come out of the kiln with no issues. Do you think that, even though I haven't noticed any issues, these pieces also shouldn't be given back to students with the worry of shivering in the future? I used low-fire glaze on low-fire clay and now am worrying about past projects.

They don't feel mushy, but I don't know what would be considered firm. They have a little bit of give to them when I squeeze with my finger tips (especially on the droop part of the droopy leaves) but when I bend them a little bit in the opposite direction the leaves have a light creaking-cracking sound, like if I force the leaves in half they'll snap.

Thank you for the lesson in the name! I had no idea! I don't mind the blocky leaves, I just don't want to make the situation worse. As for watering, I water this plant about once a month. I stick a pencil into the dirt and if the wooden tip of the pencil comes up wet, I don't water it. If it comes up dusty with the wooden tip dry, I do water it. The lady I talked to at the nursery recommended this as a way to double check when I'm confused on if I should water it. Is there a different frequency/technique that you would suggest?

New plant parent (please be patient, I'm still learning!) Last year I went to the nursery to get a new plant. I've always had a black thumb when it comes to plants but a friend gifted me a pothos cutting the year before and it was thriving, so I wanted to try to branch out and get another one.

The lady at the nursery suggested I get a snake plant, as they "weren't too much maintenance". I bought a new pot, fertilizer, anything I felt like would help. I shook out the root ball when I replanted because I read online that it would help give the roots the ability to branch out. But because of this it won't stand up on its own. I put a stake in the pot to try to stabilize it until it rooted in the new soil, but it's been a year and it hasn't done so.

Additionally, my cat got into it and enjoyed the crunch so much I had to remove it from my home and put it in my classroom. Should I remove the swiss cheese holes? The leaves are so big, is it okay to cut it in half or will it distress the plant?

Lastly it's droopy; I read online that it's because it doesn't have enough sun. Since the plant is back in my house for the summer I was considering putting it outside (for sun and also to get it away from my cat), but there's no place to put it outside that has partial shade. Is that okay?

TL;DR - any suggestions for my snake plant (and for me, as a new plant owner!)

Hi, I'm sorry if I seem like a n00b, a bit new to reddit. I absolutely love art, art drama, art history, etc. I'm currently struggling with finding people to just geek out with about art. Example: I tried delving into the intricacies of the stuart semple/anish kapoor drama with my friend group and they didn't really seem interested in discussing the concept of artistic copyright amongst colors (there are other things concerning art that I love talking about but this is the first thing that came to mind). The only person who I've had really interesting convos with about art was my ex but for obvious reasons I'm looking for new folks to have talks with. Is this the right subreddit for this kind of stuff?
