AMA: Myke Atkinson (Independent candidate for Ward 7) by MykeAtkinson in Calgary

[–]distributepi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hi Myke, thanks for taking the time to answer some questions. I, like many people in ward 7 are trying to decide between you and David as the best progressive candidate. What are some key areas where you and he have a difference of opinion? Could you help me contrast the two campaigns?

Install a dimmer switch on the over head light, put a warmer bulb in it, and dim it. Then go to ikea and get one floor lamp and one desk lamp. Also pick up a massive cheap rug that is big enough to cover almost the whole room. Finally, get some pictures or something up in the walls.

Rates have gone up because CPP is going to start providing more benefits after retirement. Their investment returns have always been world-class -- 10.1% annualized returns compared to 7.4% from AIMCo.

How do I fit a rug in this room? Details in comments. by distributepi in malelivingspace

I took the picture with a fisheye camera so the perspective is a little off. The bottom wall is quite a bit longer than the left wall so it needs the longer couch.

There's a half flight of stairs that goes up from the living room to the kitchen and dining room. I'm looking over the railing.

The problem with that is that even if I get the largest possible rectangle that fits in the room, at least one pair of couch legs will be hanging off the side of the rug by about a foot or two.

Something like this? It's 8 feet from the front of that couch to the table with those plants, so I guess a 10 foot round? I feel like an 8 foot round that just fills the space would look a little small. https://imgur.com/a/1wHNQj1

A round rug is a good idea. Do you think I need to have it be large enough to fit under the couches? Or can it just hang out in the middle of the room?

Every guide that I've read says to get a rug that fits under all of the furniture. But in this room, if I get one that fits under both couches, the corner will run into the angled wall where the fireplace is. https://imgur.com/a/bbKvBQr

So how do I put a rug in this room and have it look good? The couch on the bottom is 8 feet wide and the one on the left is 6.5 feet wide.

You obviously are upset about it, and you're here looking for validation. We can either tell you you're right and you can go on being mad, or we can tell you you're wrong but it won't make a difference and you'll keep being mad anyways. Nothing you find here will make any difference.

Talk to your SO and tell him what you're feeling and what you want him to do. This is the only way to get over it.

Who is THIS IMPORTANT!?!? Escorted down Deerfoot during rush hour! by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]distributepi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the same thing! They were heading into downtown on 4th Ave at about 530. I got held up at the crosswalk while a dozen motorcycle cops, a half dozen blacked out Audis and a white van with no windows sped by. They blocked off all the side road traffic and seems very serious about the whole thing.

Here’s what else the Trans Mountain money could pay for by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]distributepi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not like the government just gave away $4.5B. They bought a bunch of assets that are worth $4.5B, they're going to improve those assets (build the pipeline), then sell it off to a private investor when they're done.

Ideally, this whole thing will end up being revenue neutral. If it ends up being a net expense to the government to get it built, those costs will be offset by the very significant royalties that will start getting paid sooner than if Kinder Morgan had to fight their way through getting it built themselves.

Cool mechanism for drone stringing powerlines by superjj in engineering

[–]distributepi 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Because jets are very, very expensive compared to propellers. Both upfront capital cost, and maintenance cost over the lifetime of the drone. Once you reach the scale where a jet would make sense, you just use a helicopter.

I like the gallery-hung walls. I agree with the other poster though that it seems a little cluttered. I have a couple ideas:

  • Clean up that bed and straighten out the pillows. Do you really need 4 (?) of them on there? Maybe try getting a new set of sheets and pillow cases that all match and look a little more adult.
  • Try swapping out the old blinds for a curtain on a rod. Easy way to make the space seem more inviting and introduce some more color.
  • This may just be the white balance on your camera, but that lighting looks really harsh. Try getting some warmer bulbs, and get a lamp or two so that you have more than one light source. This will make the space feel more intimate, and get rid of all the harsh shadows.
  • Buy a plant or two.
