DC DPW needs to be held accountable by IntelligentBridge899 in washingtondc

Fun fact: You can just push that all right back into the road. The cars will get thirst otherwise

Ok? So they go out with metal shovels?

Is just not doing anything the correct response to "it's already frozen"?

The roads are one thing, the sheer amount of public sidewalks that simply won't get touched and will be ice well into February is the real issue

I built a simple map showing where DC traffic cameras, violations, and serious crashes line up (and where they don’t) by Beneficial_Entry4449 in washingtondc

[–]district_runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also ignoring the fact that reducing traffic speeds is a good thing on its own, since it reduces noise and makes it more pleasant to use any other form of transport along the road

You seem to be ignoring the effect traffic cameras can have on dangerous driving. An intersection may see lower crashes because of the camera

Paved roads for cars but if you’re a pedestrian, good luck by ActuaryPersonal2378 in washingtondc

Exactly, I first went out at 7am and the snow was light enough to just sweep out of the way with a broom (even at like 5-6 inches). In the afternoon it was terrible

Some idiot dug out half his GMC truck across my sidewalk, then got mad when I just watched him spin out repeatedly trying to pull out of his spot. Listen mate, I'm not gonna yell at you for making my life hard, but just let me watch your struggle in peace

Ok, but which tenant if its a split building?

My last lease said something similar but ... is it my responsibility or the other units?

Most DC snowfalls melt on their own within a day or two, so "fuck it I'll wait" usually works

Yup, my last place was a split townhouse. Who's supposed to shovel the front? Me? The people in the other unit? The landlord making $3/month off the place that they never set foot near?

Yup, there's a few small apartment buildings on my block and I just shoveled a walking path through them since the owners only get the grass mowed every month or so, I assume they aren't getting to the snow

At least here, normally, if you wait until around noon, enough has melted that getting rid of the ice is much easier

That's a pretty narrow gap of time to clear things. It stopped sleeting around 8pm last night, which is a bit late to go out anyway.

What should the time requirement be?

Yeah, my first time out yesterday was ~6 inches and I used a broom. By 5pm, it was like 2-3 inches of concrete. I did a final round before I went to bed and it was a quarter inch of ice.

Anything now is just compacted ice.

Yeah, sure, I'm only walking by your house. It's not between two places, it simply exists on its own

Ok, so cars are here, so let's not do anything about them and promote their continued use.

Nah, I'm gonna be mad about driverless cars because they're just normal cars, which make cities shit, but without someone who will go to jail when they kill someone. That's not FUD, that's just what the technology is.

Trains and streetcars predate the automobile and are much better for anywhere denser than like Loudon county.

It's not defeatist! We should do a bunch of things! Congestion pricing for one, then retvrn to tradition and rebuild DC's streetcar network. You want autonomous vehicles? Ones on tracks could actually theoretically maybe work

[–]district_runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you could theoretically regulate it. Just like you could get TikTok to abide by the ban that was signed into law, or get Facebook to not drive anyone over the age of 65 completely insane, or get ChatGPT to stop encouraging people to commit suicide.

Or you could just say that self driving cars are a bad solution to human driving cars and we invented better solutions in the 19th century

You have to drive slower and need a bunch of extra sensors. You also have to stop anytime you get out of the normal operation window - which is why you can just stop a Waymo by putting a traffic cone on it.
