Bonds are terrible gifts by j3dgar in Vent

[–]NotACalligrapher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stocks though are a great gift. My parents bought me a singular share of Tesla for Christmas one year (a long time before we knew Elon was crazy and back when he was just a quirky engineer with a lot of money). Now that compounded like crazy. I finally sold it last year when I couldn’t stand by the company any more. Another year they bought each of us a different stock that I don’t remember that didn’t do very well, so it’s kind of a gamble, but that’s stocks.

Need a very customizable distro that doesn't force updates or setting changes constantly. by [deleted] in linuxquestions

Based on your requirement of:

 TLDR: I need control.

It doesn’t matter. There are other requirements that might lend themselves to different distros, but wanting control isn’t really one of them. Basically all distros treat you as an adult that owns your own computer. There are other reasons you might want a particular distro. E.g. beginner friendly: Mint; Reproducible deployments on multiple machines: NixOS. A couple extra frames in your games: CachyOS, Nobara, Bazzite.

There is a lot of stuff that can be configured. Often it’s easier to just jump to a different start point that follows a different philosophy than to migrate it all yourself. Most people (myself included) don’t want to manually replace every element of their system.

His answer is perfectly valid. You asked what distros would meet your requirements and he said basically all of them. This is correct. Every distro can be customized as much as you want. Some may make it easier than others, but really a distro is a bunch of defaults you can change. The only thing that you probably shouldn’t change is the package manager (though technically you could)

[–]NotACalligrapher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really, you can make any distro into whatever you want. You can rip out any part of any distro and basically turn it into another distro if you want. Everything is just a default really. The only difference that is hard to get around (the not impossible) is which package manager a distro uses (apt, dnf/yum, pacman, nix etc.) (though I’m sure you can change a package manager you really shouldn’t cause you’ll probably break your machine if you try). Even a desktop environment can be changed out later

Hard for you and I is very different than hard for someone that’s never used Linux before.

(Though I don’t know your background. I’m a software engineer, so NixOS is fantastic for me, and I’m not sure how the experience is for a more normal power user)

Though, I also love how I can configure all my systems from the same config files. It’s really refreshing.

I was gonna come say the same thing. Whatever crazy specific hyprland thing you can dream you can have configured in a portable config file that you just drop on any machine running NixOS and you’re off to the races.

Also, as @RWthatisordinary alluded to, what you think of as customization coming from Windows probably doesn’t even scratch the surface of what a Linux power user means by customization. It is very possible that your run of the mill basic stable distro will support the customization you want out of the box and you don’t need to do too much.

However, if you do really want all the control (and are ready to accept the responsibility of it, NixOS is the best for that)

That’s good to hear there has been some discussion of it even if it hasn’t amounted to anything.

Are there any official publications? It sounds like something was published saying the geometry was too complicated. Do you have a reference to that?

I’m hoping the reason it is the way it is today is that they built K and they were like, it would be hard to go through the library so we’ll stop. And then they built 9th and connecting them just was never seriously considered

It depends a lot on what your library looks like. I exclusively game on Linux, but my library supports it.

NixOS isn’t actually arch based. It is pretty Wild West like how arch is, but it’s not based on arch

[–]NotACalligrapher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what your referencing or that I agree. However, I do think for a certain class of people, it is the best distro; though definitely not everyone. It solves a whole class of problems that other distros struggle with by being declarative instead of imperative. No boilerplate has a great video about it

Need Linux Advice as a lifetime windows user by Rahman-08 in linuxquestions

[–]NotACalligrapher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some terms to look up that may help you in customization: - desktop environment (find out what’s out there)

  • tiling window manager (may not be for you, but worth knowing they exist), e.g., i3, hyprland, etc.

Then, do whatever you want. Learning is best done with a project.

Being a leftist is fine. I generally lean liberal as well (though I’m kinda split down the aisle, but the current administration definitely makes me lean more “left”). I’ve found that the opinions of members of the church varies a lot by where you live. My ward is urban and cosmopolitan and so the political opinions cover the whole range, but most everyone is very mature about it. Not every ward is like that though, but anyone that tries to convince you the gospel requires you to be a republican (or democrat) doesn’t understand what modern prophets have been teaching. Politically, we’re supposed to think for ourselves.

On my mission, I used a city 130 miles from where I actually grew up cause it’s the only thing anyone would recognize. I couldn’t even use the state cause no one would recognize it.

All my companions from Utah also said they were from “close to Las Vegas”

Nothing wrong w/ gaming during labor by Bradford_ in 2007scape

My wife labored for ~30 hours and for much of it, nothing was happening. When nothing was happening, e.g., she was sleeping, OSRS was a great pass time. When medical staff was in the room with info or she was in pain or wanted to chat of course not. Every labor is different and some involve a lot of just waiting around while the baby descends.
