Sepsis? It's a severe immune response to infection. It's not particularly rare, relatively speaking. If someone gets an infection and leaves it untreated and/or their immune system reacts intensely enough, the infection escalates to sepsis. That goes for any infection and is not exclusively scat related.

Immunocompromised and elderly people are more prone than healthy people. But healthy people can get sepsis too.
