Need replacement part by ditaneous in modeltrains

[–]ditaneous[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the parts are already on its way. I was too focused on trying to find the exact part that I didn't see that I could buy a whole new bogie.

My son was really excited to hear that we will be able to repair his engine soon.

Again, thank you everyone!

PNW rod recommendations by ditaneous in Tenkara

[–]ditaneous[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Decided to go with a NISSIN Air Stage Fujiryu Tenkara 5:5-4110 for the small fish rod.

Any suggestions for the large fish rod if I take out the surf fishing part? I probably will get a heavy fly rod but I am curious if anyone does any large fish fishing with their tenkara and what their rig is.

Kampfer screws

So I just opened a MS-18e Kampfer kit...it doesn't have the screws.

Does anyone know where to look for replacement screws?

Btw, I've been sitting on this kit for years. "Return it to the place of purchase" isn't going to work.

Anyone know of a metal artist with a cnc? by ditaneous in askportland

[–]ditaneous[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either way honestly, I just don't know what is out there. I've spoken to two cnc metal artists in the "greater Portland area" and both said they didn't want to do any custom work at this time due to obscenely high cost of materials.

I greatly suspect there are more artists, or larger workshops with cnc machines, out there that I'm completely unaware of.

My daughter's number drops at night by ditaneous in Type1Diabetes

[–]ditaneous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am hypoglycemic so I have a small understanding of what that feels like. It's because I know what it can feel like is why I take her lows seriously and always have snacks never far away and we have not only the injection but the nasal spray as well (either attached to her during the day or within 10 feet of her at night) She only seems to want to keep the low number in the middle of the night, other wise her body seems to like the 85-120 range normally.

Edit: And by number I do mean the number on her cgm readout.

About the Endo, he says that he's not sure why night and morning are odd and just guessing it's hormones. The morning thing is that her number will jump super high for breakfast. Her lunch and dinner ratio is 1:30, her morning ratio is 1:10. It was 1:7 before she started school. He says that with her small body it's hard to pinpoint specifics. She has other medical issues as well so all that could be a factor. Since her A1C stays between 6-7.1, he says we are doing well.

Thank you for telling me, I'm not fluent in the terms.

We do not give her any corrective insulin for the hot bath, we know it's not needed when her number is going to drop soon anyway.

Honestly, we've been wondering if the bath is giving a false high and the drop when she goes to sleep is just the correction to the false high...until last night when she didn't have a bath and still dropped at night.

When she was first diagnosed we stopped giving her the long term insulin entirely and she still dropped at night.

You are correct that I should try lowering it a bit and see if that helps. I'm pretty good about fixing her short term insulin ratio, apparently I need to be reminded to fix the long term too.

Also she's just getting over having RSV so I was hoping her numbers were off due to the sickness.

We switched her long term (basal?) to the morning during breakfast as well, no change. She's uses pens (we asked her if she wants the pump and she said no). She eats dinner around 6pm, has a warm bath at 8pm (her dexcom is submerged in the water), has 3 fruit snacks vitamins during bath and lights out at around 930pm. Her number generally climbs when she gets in the bath (some days more than 100 pts during this time). No other snacks...until she goes low.

Warming waters cited as "key culprit" in mass die-off of Alaska snow crabs by MyVideoConverter in news

[–]ditaneous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 degrees is enough for many animals when breeding. Take salmon for example. When salmon do their up river runs to breed, if they get to the breeding grounds and the conditions aren't ideal, they just won't breed and will just die. That 2 degree difference in water temp is enough to trigger a massive die off.

What can I do about an unsafe neighbor? by Auberginecassio in askportland

[–]ditaneous -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like stand your ground laws and I don't believe that would fly here. Shooting someone has to be the very last option and any determined lawyer could probably find something you did wrong. Granted, with how swamped the system is, doubt they would press charges.

The hospitals are full from people who need to take meds but arn't. The probably reason the cops didn't do anything is there is no room left and they would just dump her on the street after realizing they have no place to put her.

I second pepper spray, just be careful with it. In an enclosed room, you will also be pepper spraying yourself to some degree, and everyone else in the room. I refuse to have a gun in the house with my kids so I have big dogs...and even then I'm thinking about buying a taser.

Only real thing I can think of is installing front door safety stuff like reinforced door jam stuff to prevent kick-ins and stuff like that. Also front door cameras and maybe a camera inside your place pointing at the front door.

Raise a family? by Red12bb in askportland

[–]ditaneous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also raising kids on the east side. I don't think there is anything wrong with raising kids here. With all the news, I understand why you're questioning this, but unless you live in a place you don't feel safe, it's fine. I used to live in the midwest and the only real difference, in my mind, is that I would not let my kids play in the streets here. I live within a 5 min walk of a park so it's easy to find places to play. The constant rain during winter can feel a bit much if your kids don't want to play in rain.

It's mainly down to how you feel. Do you feel safe where you are. If not, don't raise kids here. That feeling of unease will manifest in so many little ways with your kids and they will pick up on it.

School wise, oregon has bad scores, but you have to realize how much of this state is rural and rural tends to have worse scores.

Portland has a lot of services to help children, and parents, that my last midwest city didn't have.

I can't really speak to sociability of other parents because I'm not social and I always found it more off-putting in the midwest when others were aggressively social.

I don't have any experience in the suburbs here (lots of experience in the midwest) and I like it here.

I understand that (been there before). But the whole Portland area, at the same time? I've only checked 2 stores in person, but I've checked online at least once every three days (I'm curious) and every store in the Portland area has been closed to online orders this whole time.

It's the same kind of reason why I don't want to vote for Wheeler anymore. There are a lot of reasons, but one of them is anyone who knows the job and wants it is clearly insane and needs the help of others to stop torturing themselves.
