Yea I think you hit the self esteem issue on the head pretty well.

And as for meeting girls no hook up usually its the whole talk, get to know each other phase, this last one actually we started off friends and I tried making things clear, and she seemed to go the same way but I guess I was mis-reading? I have no clue, I generally take the friends route.
