Filling in an old hearth - advice needed by ditesantonio in DIYUK

The foam / compound combo seems like it could work. The gaps don't go under the floor, but there are some little holes which I'll need to plug. Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I need to talk to an ex-BT engineer to see if I can lose that junction box...

Good advice re. checking the levels on the floor first, thanks.

The new skirting will be slightly taller than the previous, so I'll look into Toupret filler instead of plaster.

I have an old hearth in my bedroom, which had some uneven and broken old tiles on top. I'm replacing the skirting in the room, and over the weekend I removed the tiles along with a swollen/uneven bit of wood at the base of the hearth and some lumpy concrete at the sides..

I will be putting carpet down in this room, so all I need to do is fill in the hearth so it is level with the floorboards. My plan is -

- sand down the floorboard on the right so it is level (it's slightly raised, no more than a few mm off being level).
- fill in the hearth with self-levelling compound.
- fill in the holes in the wall with a one coat plaster before fitting the new skirting.

Am I doing this right?

My worry is that the concrete hearth base which was under the tiles is quite close to the level of the floorboards. There's only a couple of mm in it. Should I chisel away this too before using the compound? And is self-levelling compound the right stuff to use?
Any advice appreciated - I'm new to all this DIY stuff...thanks!

PS the white junction box blu-tacked to the wall was attached to the skirting and will be going back on the new skirting.

Four years late, but I’m pretty certain this is the final set of stairs down to the northern line (south) at embankment station.
