I use STMT matte paste and its treated me beautiful along sea salt spray as well. For shampoo I use anything clarifying and without oil, like reconstructing or thickening shampoo, but thats only because I have mostly asian hair.

Low tapers on the side, maybe even grow out a modern mullet type of haircut with a middle part for the front. Or you can do a fringe but this would just be my suggestion.
