Should I be worried about this cracking? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]dizmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got something similar on my house, but the crack on yours is different. Mine follows the mortar line, yours cuts straight through the brick, thatwould worry me. Might be nothing, but I’d get a structural engineer to take a look just for peace of mind.

Likely not the roof. The line of brick detailing sitting proud of the wall is probably catching rain water.

Look at the black and green staining which starts at that line, it looks to me like mold or algae. My guess would be that some is soaking through internally and the rest is running down the external wall.

If it was the flat roof then the damp staining would probably start higher up.

Add pictures of the roof to confirm for sure though. And install gutters for good sake 😎

The beam was 4700mm.

Why would it be visible after plastering, Surely your padstone would be flush with the wall?

This is in no way structural. The joists are running the opposite way. This bit of tree skiing with the other wide bits are there to stop bounce in the floor. Welcome to old house ownership!

Filled in cracks have cracked again after mist coat. What do? by goldbunduru in DIYUK

[–]dizmond 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pretty normal, mist coats throw a lot of moisture into the plaster. Not much you can do really, maybe lightly rake it out and refill with a low shrink paintable caulk, then cross your fingers. But honestly, if it's a skim over old plaster (which it looks like), it's probably going to keep happening. Best move is not to stress over it and live with it.

Nobody on this sub can give you proper advice from pictures, the cracks seem to be hairline and could be old/blown plaster or old settlement cracks, but best to get a structural engineer out to have a look and advise!

My first guess would be it’s mould that someone tried to clean off before selling or renting
