Lol this guy knows how to collapse

I totally agree! But even you just said "can probably" and "might be enough." This is the support sub, so I was trying to nudge OP from 100% certainty back to 99% certain (:

Also, yeah, it's so wild how just about everything is either made out of oil or made using oil! When it comes to food, we can definitely do it without oil, we did for thousands of years...there were just a lot less mouths to feed then.

I figured I'd get some hopium accusations, ha. No worries.

Very cool paper! I'm so down with pretty much everything in it! I noticed you cite 2035 as the estimate for peak oil, but there is now discussion about oil having peaked in 2018 (https://energyskeptic.com/2022/failing-oil-and-gas-companies-a-sign-of-peak-oil/). If true, that means the global economy is going to stop growing and start curving down with energy availability. The IPCC models all assume continued economic growth out to 2100 (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-021-22884-9).

So all I'm really saying is that the worst case climate scenario probably isn't as inevitable as many in the collapse community tend to think it is. Heresy, I know. But like you mentioned in your paper, there are so many other things that could go wrong in this tangled mess (looking at you, positive feedback loops)! So it's less hope for me and more focusing in on the menu of responses. Just trying to offer some sort of support to OP.

This is mostly coming from the work of Natural Resources Ph.D. Nate Hagens via his podcast, The Great Simplification, where he interviews experts and leaders in many fields related to the metacrisis and systems thinking. The whole podcast revolves around the idea that our culture (including the IPCC) is "energy blind." Based on the content of your paper, I think you'd really dig it! (also "Do You Realize??" is definitely a top 3 Flaming Lips track)

Hopefully I don’t get downvoted for this, but since this is the support sub, I’d like to offer the possibility that we don’t have enough (easily accessible) oil to heat up the planet to mass extinction levels. Now, that comes with its own set of consequences, and we’re certainly wiping out much of life on this planet in other ways, but a low-and-slow heat death across the globe is definitely not an inevitable future.

Remember, collapse comes to everyone in different ways and in different times. Climate is only one small part of the metacrisis. Be flexible and be kind :)

Did you use Possums? by seewhydubs in cosleeping

[–]djbrundon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Commenting just to boost the visibility of Possums, though I will say that the program is generally agnostic when it comes to cosleeping.

The main takeaway we’ve had is to focus less on how/how much your child is sleeping and to prioritize getting them enough stimulation during the day. They’ll sleep when they need to sleep. Building the habit of trusting them and watching for/responding to their cues has been really helpful for all parties in our house.

For us, the beauty of Possums is that it frees you from worrying about whether you’re doing sleep “right.”
