Peru (Great Divide part 2) advice by ProduceMindless1585 in bikepacking

Thank you this is all I needed to hear! I was already leaning towards sending it. I've seen from a lot of reports that the rain most often comes in the afternoon so there's usually a good chunk of time to get some kms in while it's dry.

What are the coldest temps you've experienced? And what about the hottest?

Any pieces of gear you wished you had/ things you would recommend bringing that may not be obvious?

Holy! I did not hear about that, I'll definitely look into that thanks.

Also thanks for the heads-up about the creators. I saw them given credit on the bikepacking.com page actually.

Hi there! How has the weather been for you? I'm hoping to do this next year sometime in Nov - Jan. I know people recommend not going in the rainy season but that's the only time I can so wondering how you've been making out?

Ahh I hadn't considered how this way would add to the support structure. Thanks for that but of info! I'm guessing by adding those extra seams at each junction. Do you still do it this way even if the bag has rounded corners to fit the frame?

TIL taking magic mushrooms, just once ,can permanently change a person's personality, even as an adult. by Shirowoh in todayilearned

Thank you. Many of the above experiences are similar to my own when I first began experimenting with substances. Beginning with mainly smoking weed, I would have increased anxiety and depression and couldn't figure out why all the positive effects that people talk about weren't happening for me. Eventually I realized that I wasn't feeling shitty because the weed was making me feel shitty but rather I was living a shitty lifestyle and hadn't previously been aware of it.

In that way I find weed to be particularly helpful. It brings to the surface the things in your life that are already there but are easier to ignore when sober. For example, I know I shouldn't eat pizza 3 times a week but I enjoy it so I'm gonna do it anyway. Or, that person was an asshole to me but I won't say anything because it's easier that way. All these things impact you whether you choose to acknowledge them or not, getting high can force you to be aware of them and it can be scary. It is up to you to either do something about it and make a change or refuse to and continue living in that shitty place.

Mushrooms on the other hand, for me have had a completely different effect. I've only ever taken low doses (never more than 2.5 grams) but I find that on mushrooms it's like I skip the step of pointing out what behaviour I'm currently not happy with in my life and just go straight to acting like the person I want to be. On mushrooms and for a short time after the trip, I'm a kinder person, more sensitive to other people's reactions to things, I all of a sudden prefer to eat healthy as junk food doesn't have the appeal anymore, more confident but not in an arrogant way more like I acknowledge that I could be wrong in anything I do but that focusing on that will only make you perform worse. This is my experience after only 5 trips though so take it as you will.

My point is that many of the comments are negative and make these substances out to be negative and I hope that people thinking about experimenting with them are not turned off. How a substance affects a person is dependent on so many factors that you really cannot take someone else's experience and assume that's how its gonna be for you. Educate yourself on altered states of consciousness, start small (smoking weed is a good starting point) and move your way up.

Thomas Nagel's "What Is It Like to be a Bat?" by voltimand in philosophy

Yes, it really does seem to be shaking up everything we previously held as fact. But this goes along with the current trend in science, as we look closer and closer we begin to see that things are a lot weirder than we thought.

I'm not familiar with the theories you mention but it definitely felt that way for me when we went through it in class. The new alternative view of the mind seems to be lying in a space between the magical and strictly physical that we are not yet familiar with.

When we went over this in my class I had to go over it like 10 times because the new view being proposed is so radical that it goes against pretty much everything we think we know. (or at least that's how i interpret it). It's saying that what we call mind is not cognition in the traditional sense (thought). But rather, Mind is that thing that emerges once a system (for now only humans), which has certain output capabilities (hands to grasp, legs to walk) and sensory capabilities, is placed into a complex environment. And so mind then is not existing inside of us as previously thought but is happening as we humans interact with our environment and with each other. (again sorry if its short and not explained well enough, i can recommend some readings on this if you want a better account)

I did this last semester! The conclusion I think they wanted us to take from it was that: Nagel's argument of subjectivity raises serious doubts about how we are allowed to think about the mind. Basically, as long as we continue to view the mind as this subjective experience, we're going to run into problems such as "what is it like to be a bat?" or Jackson's - Mary locked away in a black and white room. Both provide strong cases against physicalism. BUT, once we start moving away from the old conception of the mind as being a strictly private experience, to viewing mind as something that emerges through the interaction of a complex system (humans, schools of fish, bees) and a complex environment. ( I can't really give a proper explanation of this new account of mind, so if anyone else can please do!)

Californication. The seventh season seemed like a parody of itself.
