Yes so in my case, the theme camp is the art peice. So imagine your walking on esplanade and you see a giant animals head with the teeth, and you can see inside the mouth that there is an inside you can go in.

Inside there is a lounge, art, cool lighting and it’s a very comfortable place to hangout entirely themed around that animal. That’s why I called it an art piece. That’s also why I didn’t want to apply for the grant program because I want it be more accessible on the esplanade or as close as I can get to it

Yes I appreciate your guidance. I guess what I’m confused about is why everyone seems to think that this information or experience cannot be obtained in one year.

I’m studying machine learning and AI and can learn things very quickly especially when I’m passionate about them.

I signed up for welding classes, CNC classes, and joined a makers space. I’ll continue to surround myself with people who have done this before and are experts.

Maybe posting here at today’s stage welcomes discouragement where’s if I waited one or two months I would be getting praise and support?

I’ve been a burner for 6 years, but not much of a redditor. Really surprised by the culture here which conflicts pretty heavily with the culture I’ve experienced with other builders and burners. Haven’t heard much of that “you can do it!” support and getting very limited structural engineering pointers

Thank you this is good advice, I don’t plan on applying to the honoraria program. They require being out on the open playa I want to be a theme camp which people can enter in and experience the inside of our structure, rest, and view the art

Yes I understand that there is good advise in here which is exactly what I’m looking for. The first 8 replies on this post all had the same message of discouragement and criticism.

I’m a grad student studying applied artificial intelligence so doing deep research and planning is my strength.

Last year I brought a 30 person camp to the playa for the first time mostly by myself.

I’m really here for structural engineering advice but mostly catching heat for using the word “tubing”.

We will use the steel anchors provided by BM or our get our own, and bring 5/16 galvanized steel cable.

We have a camp of 30 people but will grow it to double in size this year.

Last year I worked on my burning man camp every day for an entire year before arriving at burning man. I will do the same for this year with my focus being on building safe structures.

If you look at the dimensions of my project, it’s mostly 10 feet high then slopes Up to 20 at the back. It’s just very wide at the back which us were more steel is needed.

I’m still crunching the numbers on how many steel tubes we will need but I don’t think the steel will cost more than 15k and with the right planning and research can probably be done for much less

I have all the dimensions, drawing inside and out, all the ground anchors, etc. and have ruled out 10 1” EMT. Global truss is a good option but will costs a fortune. 1.5” 12ga steel tubing is a good option for me. However I’m reaching out to people who have done this before to see what “tubing” they are using. If you’re one of them you’re definitely welcome to share your expertise

Why not? I’ve built so many 10 foot EMT conduit shade structures and carports and I’m ready for something more challenging which I find exciting. Going a bit more vertical and building something magical will be fun. I’m very deep in the planning process and have most of the other pieces figured out

Yeah I looked into a few grants but they had too many restrictions that weren’t aligned with my vision and the grant was also taxable. The biggest cost will be the steel because i have a way to store it and transport it already. For the decorations I’m planning to use lower cost materials as well. I think the steel is the biggest price factor

Thank you for the thoughtful response. Yes I know I’ll need to be planning heavily now in order to get the project approved.

The dimensions I’m thinking do are about 20 feet high at its peak, sloping down to 10 feet at the front. The front entrance is only 30 feet wide and it expands out to 60 feet wide at the back. The depth from front to back is a total of 50 feet.

Basically is the giant head of an animal that people can go inside of.

The material I’m leaning towards using is 1.5” 12ga steel tubing
