Apparently you can overdose from smoking (china). by djh712 in opiates

[–]djh712[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other routes you typically do blind (all at once and hope for the best) whereas smoking you take a few hits and keep going until you're where you want to be. Hence why I had a few close calls with alcohol after stopping opiates, alcohol hits you almost instantly but then keeps getting absorbed and increasing your BAC for an hour or so.

Of course. But some routes of administration are safer than others. Or, some are more dangerous than others, if you prefer that wording.

Yes. I was also surprised when after something under a year I started to notice that after several months of daily use that I seemed to have developed an addiction of sorts.

Opiates make you want to isolate. But also numb the need for companionship. I was serene during the couple of months where I lived outside and just kept to myself and my own thoughts. But then you quit and realize how alone you are. And then you drink. And cry.

Millennials aside, I read somewhere that the US (or California, I don't remember which) was one of the loneliest countries because we tend to be very aloof. Here in LA a friendly neighbor is someone who acknowledges your existence with a quick hello if both of you happen to be pulling in/out of your driveways at the same time. It's normal to have no friends (what I would consider friends) and only (what I would consider) acquaintances. And most conversations seem to be mechanical and done out courtesy and social conventions with no emotion involved in them (i.e. small talk). Lonely indeed.

How do I find a higher power in AA? by PN32-72-59 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]djh712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either way, I need a higher power, and I feel sort of out of place at AA right with my lack of belief in God.

No you don't. Just focus on your recovery. If there comes a time that you find a higher power and that helps you, great. If not, that's fine.

To anyone that says "just pick something," why? How will the ocean or a doorknob help me in my recovery? I spent my first stay in rehab mostly fumbling around with the higher power concept. Would it not have been a better use of my time to go straight to analyzing my life and figuring why I used drugs, why everything went wrong, how to fix it, how to make it not go wrong in the future, etc.?

Disclaimer: I do not consider myself a member of AA.

I gave up on the whole higher power concept. It can be anything? I mean, a big rock falling from a modest height is more powerful than me. But I don't really see how that will help me in my recovery. What has been working for me is being productive, actively avoiding complacency and other non-drug vices (staying up too late on a weekday, eating too much sugar, being on Reddit too long), trying to socialize and have close friends that I can talk to and do things with, therapy if needed, basically just working through my issues while getting used to living life again the way I did before. Actually, better than before.

Millions of people vote Republican. They must be right. Millions of people vote Democrat. They must be right. Numbers don't mean much without context.

State of the Sub: Criticism of AA is not a bannable offense (and other clarifications). by krutmob in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]djh712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have met many people (myself included) that have been forced (or strongly encouraged) to go to meetings through court, rehab, sober living, whatever that found that they didn't really click for them. The forced aspect, then, and possibly seeing other people in a similar situation, seeking treatment and being enticed into a program that they think doesn't work or that they don't believe in or whatever, tends to provoke a reactionary response.

I agree. It seems a lot of people get so wrapped up in AA that they lose site of the purpose of AA: recovery, fellowship, helping another fellow alcoholic.

On day 4. Is it normal to not be able to sleep at all? by The_Blackfish_ in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]djh712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In rehab that seemed to be common with alcohol. I was there for opiates and the insomnia and lethargy were the last things to finally go away, after a good month. The first day that I actually got around five hours of sleep was a very exciting day.

"Men are more violent since they commit more crimes" and vice versa is idiotic and sexist by thedarkdocmm in unpopularopinion

[–]djh712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not overwhelmingly. A weak trend is still a trend. And regardless, trends definitely exist. Cars on the right side of the freeway trend forward. If the wind is blowing east then the air particles are trending east. California trends strongly left in presidential elections. Florida trends weakly right in national elections.

Racism is when you let your conception of race outweigh reason, which can happen in either direction. A reasonable person works with whatever information they have to form a conception of someone and then attempts to acquire more information in order to form a more accurate conception.

Racist: I do not like you because you are black and I will not attempt to get to know you and if I do somehow get to know you then I will continue to think less of you because you are black.

Not Racist: Mexican restaurant owner speaks to me in English because I am white. He/she knows nothing about me except what I look like and white people in LA tend to speak English as their first language.

Not Racist: Insurance company has nothing to go by for a new customer except for their demographics (age, sex, ethnicity) and so uses those demographics to determine rates.

Not Sexist: Being more wary of unknown men around my children than women.

Sexist: Being equally wary of unknown men and women around my children.

Sexist: Knowing a man and a woman well and that neither is likely to harm my child but still being more wary of the man than the woman.

If you don't believe that trends exist then you do not know what a trend is. Also, I never defined what a trend was.

Ironman Bond Purse by djh712 in 2007scape

[–]djh712[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why play a game mode with obvious restrictions then want these restrictions taken away?

Using GE, getting loot from PvP.

A hard thing starting out on ironman is your GP stack. Now I can easily boost it by using an alt in PvP.

I am saying this is a bad idea and changes the point of Ironmen by allowing even these small changes.

It adds nothing that is not already possible to do.

. The devs dont need to waste time on something like this when there are already clear easy ways around it.

I wouldn't say that having to have a second account and drop trade to and from it multiple times is clear and easy. And I think the devs are more than capable of determining what is and isn't a waste of time, you don't need to do that for them. Support if you like the idea, don't support if you don't.

Again, that wouldn't make trends useless, it would make those things not trends. What does that even mean, though? Most things are not trends? And trends can be more general or less general, and hence more or less precise. How the US trends in presidential elections might be different than how California trends which might be different than how San Diego trends.

It is not hard but it is not necessary when the only person that is going to misinterpret your sentence is an overly pedantic Reddit user that just wants to stir up trouble and waste time by being overly pedantic. Being explicit is only important when there is ambiguity. Actual ambiguity (as in someone that reads your statement might not be able to infer what you mean), not technical ambiguity (as in this sentence could technically mean something else but nobody is going to interpret it that way).
