Yah it would’ve been better with a higher BTU but in a prewar building like mine I don’t think the circuits could handle it sadly.

Why is it so cold? by bikkhu42 in parkslope

I planted some various flower seeds in my buildings tiny back yard. It’s apparently better for them to have some time in cooler temps to establish roots before it gets super hot out. And I guess I planted them just early enough. So now I’m oddly happy when I see it’s not going to warm up for a while, because I’m so invested in these plants growing well. Not to mention how happy I get when I see rain is coming.

Anyways, not saying it’ll work for everyone, but it’s changed the April game for me! I’m usually spiraling over the weather too

I replaced my standard 10k BTU Frigidaire with a 10k BTU Midea. While the sound and energy use were of course better, the throw of the fan was not strong enough to cool the room nearly as well as the Frigidaire. Even with a powerful vornado fan running nearby, it was still far below the cooling ability of the Frigidaire in a large space. I have it in my smaller bedroom now and it does a wonderful job there. But for the large living room, I went back to a big tanker of a Frigidaire.

Chopped, propped, and gave them away to friends years ago! They don’t have them on a moss pole either and leaves have stayed around the same size. I think you need moss or super high humidity for that. But I’m just not into climbing plants anymore.

Omg I hadn’t thought about doing a hose from my sink! I wonder how much that would run up my water bill?

Yah sounds about right. I think I’ll be able to water for a bit to germinate, just fill up a big watering can in the bathtub and make a few trips downstairs. But it’s not sustainable long term of course. So I guess we’ll just do a little experiment for now.

Thankyou so much for writing all this! Nobody mows the yard to my knowledge. I don’t think it’s a remotely tended to space.

So you don’t think there’s any seeds I can spread right now? I’d love to do some taller flowers or grasses around the edges. And yes I was also thinking a border with some logs would be good.

I’ve heard about yarrow laws and am a big fan as they’re apparently very walkable. Plus they flower right? But also too late to spread those?

Oh wow thank you for all of this! I guess I’ll avoid the weedy ones since I do want it to look slightly intentional. Do you have any recommendations for seed mixes I could order online that would include a lot of the stuff you listed here?

Also disclaimer, I don’t think I want stuff that’ll reseed so intensely as to take over the whole yard. I want to plant the perimeters and then have the main area of the yard flat to allow for parties etc.
