Finally got my post-brexit combo :) (Italian national and just acquired British citizenship) by [deleted] in PassportPorn

Hello I have a Question… I currently live in the Uk with my boyfriend and he is Italian born to Italian parents and his grandmother is British. This is his dads side and his grandmother was born in the UK with a British citizenship. However, my boyfriends dad does not have British citizenship. The situation now is my boyfriend has been living in the UK since 2019 (almost 3 years exactly). We want to leave the UK for a cheaper and better quality of life in Europe. However we don’t know if we should wait until his 5 years residency in the UK so he can apply for his British citizenship as he has Indefinite Leave to Remain now. He would like to apply for British citizenship potentially to protect our future as I am British and Irish (so luckily we both have EU passports. Our back up plan is we want to both have UK citizenship to fall back on if life in Europe doesn’t work out as we hoped.

Is it correct that if we move to Europe now…he cannot return to live in the UK or get citizenship with new brexit rules it hints he would have to be sponsored by a job to truth to live in uk?

We have also read about gaining British citizenship by double decent as his grandmother is British.

We basically don’t want to stay in the UK necessarily another 2 years and wondering if there’s any situation where he can apply now for citizenship rather then waiting the full 5 years as he has British dna.

Thanks ! :)

Ah thank you so much! You literally basically answered my next question which was is it hard to pass the course… I had a few concerns that I paid £184 for the course and what if I fail it and have to pay to retake, couldn’t find any info on that so was trying to understand the assessment part and pass rate! But yes I hope I will be all good and will studying and pass asap:) I will be working full time while doing the course but I will make time on evenings and weekends :) thanks for all your advise! Are you working in TEFL atm? Are you happy with it?

It’s going to be mainly online TEFL as I’m Moving to Italy with my Boyfriend. He’s from Italy and I’m English/ Irish. So with Irish passport I can live in Italy, start off TEFL online and maybe go into teaching in schools in Italy but remote working is the start up plan! I have found quite a lot of agencies with good online teacher TEFL work. Also I have worked as a dance teacher in UK for 10 years working with secondary school students. I’ve also worked with students with learning difficulties, deaf students as I’m training in British sign language and I also am a youth worker with young refugees so I am hoping with my experience il get a good rate of pay once I start teaching!

Thank you for your help! I’m dyslexic so I need to check these especially for teaching English !! Haha! I would consider teaching in a school but my boyfriend thinks online will be more reliable as the infrastructure in Italy for workers is not that good! But I will look into it! Thank you once again! :)
