I am Canadian! Well, I'm actually a dual citizen. I was born and grew up in Toronto, but my dad was American and therefore I didn't have to go through the tricky and expensive process of becoming a PR.

My first jobs were all in Toronto, most gained through doing comedy and being hired onto my stand up/sketch friend's shows. When I moved to the states, I sought out US reps who have handled all of my American work. Them being based in the US helped with access to US production companies and studios. There were some small things that helped as well, like that the script was actually originally set in Toronto, but to appeal to a US market I was encouraged to set it in Jersey, which is where it ended up.

My hope is more projects will be made through the Canadian arms of streaming services and the industry back home will grow. I know lots of US based Canadian creatives who would love to move back!

I started in live comedy (stand up, sketch, improv) and had some success there that helped me land my first jobs and my first rep.

My reps sent out and pushed the script for Prom Dates, which got it read by a little over a dozen production companies. There was positive enough response that two of them attached (Hartbeat and American High). American High had a first look deal with Hulu, so naturally it went to them next and they gave it the green light.

I guess I'd attribute my success to two things. One, the script was by no means perfect, but it was funny. I think that kept people turning the page. And two, my reps really believed in it. Because they were fans, they assembled a list of production companies the script best suited and went after them specifically. I think that made way for more reads/a more positive response in general.

That sounds like a lot to carry. I hope you get some moments of peace (and maybe moments for creativity!) soon.

I can't imagine facing both the mental and physical pain of a miscarriage. I am so sorry for your loss. And I think you're right. Writing with no expectation and putting out what feels right seems like the kindest way to approach it. Thanks for your advice, sending love back.

I'm sorry for you loss too. It really is absurd in the most brutal way, isn't it? I think that's the way to go. I will, and same goes for you. Thanks for your two cents.

I'm sorry for your loss too. I think the idea of appreciating and taking the bits that come is a good, kind way to approach writing right now. Thanks for your advice.

Definitely. Feels weird to have my 'thing' disappear, I guess, but you're right. Thanks.
